Appreciate the detailed response. I was in two minds over getting the ssd. I have now decided to postpone it and stick to the existing hdd. Also sticking to win 7 for now since the usage is absolutely basic.
Thanks

Don't stick to hdd unless you absolutely can't afford 1.5k & don't stick to win 7 after 14th jan 2020(day of its official support ending),at least install win 8.1(by using means you know what I am talking about, you cannot "officially buy" it anyway currently) & install classic shell(or its successor open shell) which should be close enough to win 7.

If you have a genuine Windows 7 license, by all means upgrade to Windows 10. It is free of cost. You will get security updates, which IIRC stop next year on Windows 7.

Also there is no harm in getting a small SSD right now, in fact I would recommend getting a 120GB SSD if your budget can allow it.
How to upgrade? I thought the window was closed already.

Officially the window is closed, unofficially microsoft is more than happy to upgrade any win 7 to win 10 & they don't even care about how win 7 is activated(aka you know what I mean) as long as you upgrade to win 10.

Just download the win 10 iso/setup from MS site & run the setup.exe inside & upgrade process will start.
