Basic Desktop PC required for 20k

Judgement Time!!
Hi Guys,

My dad's old pc's motherboard has given away and now i need to buy a new one. I am looking for Motherboard, Processor, Ram as other components seem to be working fine. I also need to buy a new cabinet but i am going to separate the cost of cabinet from this list. The components which we already have are Dell 1080p monitor, 2 hard drives, Keyboard and mouse.

Can you guys please suggest a build. His usage is primarily basic as in he uses it to work in microsoft office, Autocad etc and occasionally listen to songs and watch movies.

Total budget for build is 20k. I have a corsair vx 450 power supply but its been giving problems. So i will test and confirm if we need a new PSU. Cabinet cost would be around 1500-2000.

Hey, Thanks for the spec sheet. All seems good but as of now, we don't need an SSD since we have two hard drives already. Also would it be possible for you to recommend a cabinet too for about 2k?

This is going to sound noobish but does the motherboard support HDMI output for the monitor?

SSD boots faster windows. Buy any 120GB SSD.
Antec cabinets are good at your price range. Check them from prime abgb

Oh then it makes sense. The hard drive still has win 7.. Was going to move to Win 10 anyways, so might as well buy this.

I feel 120 GB for OS drive is going to be a limitation in future.

Better go for 240+.
Yes, looking at either 240 or 500..
Quick question, Is it worth purchasing Win 10 or continue with Win 7?My dad will be using the pc solely to use MSOffice, Autocad etc

As suggested above, you can still upgrade win 7 to win 10(but I suggest doing this from win 7 ult so you get win 10 pro as win 10 home is very restricted with many settings like stopping automatic updates etc not available to user). Just create a MS account(any outlook email id will do) & use that to login after successfully upgrading win 7 ult(if you are still running win 7 home even then no issue as you can easily get win 7 ult activated by you know what) to win 10 pro which will then link your win 10 pro license to this MS account. You can then use this same ms account to login into win 10 pro on new pc & run activation troubleshooter which will transfer license to activate win 10 pro on new pc(you must be connected to net while login using ms account).

If you already have a couple of HDDs, there is no point getting a >120GB SSD.

Since it is for very basic use, I'd suggest you change the default location of the downloads and temp folders to one of the HDDs. That way most of the everyday cruft that could clog the SSD will end up elsewhere, and in the event of a disk failure you're not looking at a total loss of data.

When later the SSD prices go down even more you can always upgrade if the 120GB feels too limiting. In terms of Price/GB the sweet spot AFAIK is in the 120-240GB range currently.

Also if you already have a genuine Windows license just stick to that. For a basic computer no point spending extra cash on a Windows 10 Pro license - I use both versions of the software at work and while some settings are definitely locked down in the Home version, it makes no practical difference as far as operability of the programs you mentioned goes. Automatic updates can also be scheduled and postponed in the Home version, but you cannot stop them from being downloaded. CAD can be either CPU or GPU heavy (or both), so the money spent on a new license is better allocated to good hardware. Windows will never be as snappy as most Linux distributions in any situation.

Appreciate the detailed response. I was in two minds over getting the ssd. I have now decided to postpone it and stick to the existing hdd. Also sticking to win 7 for now since the usage is absolutely basic.
Thanks

If you have a genuine Windows 7 license, by all means upgrade to Windows 10. It is free of cost. You will get security updates, which IIRC stop next year on Windows 7.

Also there is no harm in getting a small SSD right now, in fact I would recommend getting a 120GB SSD if your budget can allow it.
