Avoid drive letter change

I have WinXP SP2 installed along with all the latest updates.
When we install another HDD on WinXP, the drive letters change permanently until u format the Windows.
For eg, when install another HDD, the D: drive changes to E:, E: to F:, F: to G:, etc.
How can I avoid automatic changing of drive letters?

The drive letters dont change permanently... In control panel, go to administrative tasks and run computer management. Go to disk management. This will give a list of the partitions. You can make changes here...

This problem is inherent to all Windows versions AFAIK

I think the only way to avoid problem is to have the new hdd formatted without primary partitions... (cannot install another os then).. Not sure though...

i did try this and the driver letters being assigned were the ones left. No changes like d-e e-f

I know that.
Well, the problem is I have a dual boot system.
On C:, Win98 SE is installed & on D: WinXP SP2.
Now, when I install a new/another hard disk, D: becomes E: & so on in WinXP but C: drive remains the same. I don't want any drive letter to change. I want the new HDD's partitions to be assigned new drive letters, not the ones already in use.
The drive letters don't change permanently in Win98 SE.

@virus, use a temporary drive! jus the programming logic,

suppose there r C,D,E drives and they got changed to C E F and D drive has become say anotehr hardisk partition... now change D to say X, D->X, E->D, F->E, X->G or watever...

@g_goyal2000, windows makes sure that the primary of every hardisk comes first. so C drive is ur first hardisk primary and D drive is the secondary of ur first.. when u installed second hardisk it jus has changed it back. u can always change the drive letters permanently until next installation atleast using the method told by arun.

use sakumar's way and when u remove and connect Hdd keep the cable position constant
