Apple Inc. had little to quarrel about with the latest figures from Gartner, which showed the Mac maker standing firm against a tidal wave of Windows PC sales triggered by Vista. For the first quarter of 2007, Mac unit shipments were up some 30 percent.

Research firm Gartner published a preliminary report on Wednesday saying that rapid Vista sales scarcely made a dent in Apple's marketshare during the first quarter of the year, declining only a tenth of a point to reach an even 5 percent of US computer shipments by the end of March.

Now this is genuinely surprising. I'd have thought that with Vista's release and people postponing buying Macs in anticipation for Leopard, Mac sales would slow down this season, but they are actually growing. And that too, faster than all other manufacturers. Cool, isn't it! :)

Actually what you thought is kind of correct. Although Mac sales has increased when compared to Q1 2006; it has been constantly dropping since Q3, 2006. Where Apple sold 975,000 systems in Q3 2006, it dropped to 808,000 in Q4 2006 and then even more in Q1 2007 where it turned out to be 741,000. So your feelings regarding the waiting for Leopard is more or less on the spot.
