Bad news for ppl workin in AMD
Advanced Micro Devices Inc. plans to cut its work force by about 10 percent by the end of the third quarter.
Sunnyvale, Calif.-based AMD says it doesn't yet know how much it will take in restructuring charges, because the reorganization details are still being finalized. AMD has about 16,420 employees overall. The company says the cuts will be across the board, at all levels.
In Austin, Texas, AMD employs about 2,700 people. The company would not disclose if any are being let go in Austin. AMD is a competitor of Intel Corp., which has a computer chip manufacturing plant in Rio Rancho, N.M.
AMD says it expects revenue for the first quarter to be about $1.5 billion, a 22 percent increase compared with the first quarter of 2007 and a 15 percent decrease compared with the fourth quarter of 2007.
The decrease is due to lower-than-expected sales across all business segments, AMD says. The company previously anticipated first quarter revenue to decline in line with seasonality.
