MUMBAI: It was one of those rare occasions when Akshay Kumar had to slip back to being Rajiv Bhatia (permanent address Chandni Chowk, Delhi 6),
who was only a temporary resident of Juhu, Mumbai.
The Bollywood actor was arrested on Monday in an obscenity case registered against him at the Vakola police station. He had to spend an hour at the police station and was released on bail after the police completed the procedural formalities; these included filling up a "surrender form'', where the reel hero had to give all his real-life details.
Vakola police station senior inspector Sanjay Nekalikar said, "He surrendered, after which we recorded his statement and released him on a surety of Rs 950. The actor said whatever happened was not done intentionally.''
Akshay unveiled a new brand of jeans during the recent Lakme Fashion Week held at a Santa Cruz hotel. He walked the ramp and then went to his wife, Twinkle, who was seated in the audience, and asked her to unbutton his jeans.
A self-proclaimed social worker promptly filed a complaint with the Vakola police against the actor, his wife Twinkle, the show organiser and the hotel management, asking that they be booked for indecent, vulgar and obscene behaviour.
The police registered the case last month but Akshay was on a foreign tour and so the former had to wait to arrest him formally. The police had earlier arrested Twinkle and released her on the bail.
Akshay, accompanied by his advocate, arrived at the office of the local assistant commissioner of police in Vile Parle around 9.30 am on Monday; they then proceeded to the Vakola police station.
The police recorded his statement, asked him to fill up a "surrender form'' and then allowed him to go.
Akshay declined to talk about the controversy but his spokesperson said, "Akshay Kumar, as a law-abiding and responsible citizen, insisted that he would meet the police and complete all the formalities after returning from his overseas shooting stint.''
Akshay had flown to South Africa for a shoot before the case was filed. He was expected to return in April, but had to fly straight to Singapore to shoot for another film.
