A terabyte of storage may seem like overkill — after all, that’s 1,000 gigabytes, and it was only yesterday that a 4-gigabyte drive was considered gigantic. But Maxtor doesn’t seem to agree. Its Shared Storage II, available now, is a network drive that can hold up to 16,600 songs, 72 hours of high-resolution video or 768,000 photos.
If you have yet to accumulate that much media, the drive also offers automated backup of PC’s and Mac’s, so multiple computers can store mirrors of their data on one centralized device.
The Shared Storage II connects via an Ethernet port to any home or office network and can support up to 20 computers. It is password-protected for security. The six-pound drive, available from electronics retailers for $900, can also connect to Universal Plug and Play devices for sharing media throughout your house.
The drive has two U.S.B. ports to allow the sharing of a printer over your network — or the addition of yet more storage, should you need it.
