Want to upgrade another transcend 2gb ddr2 800mhz in my system following the rate drop, I inquired the Nehru place market & I am quoted for 1gb, 2500/- + 4% VAT, is that a gud price for this ram???

Another question is related to actually using 4Gb ram in XP-pro 32bit, reading the web I understand that I have to enable 3gb switch under XP pro & the OS will use 3gb max for any application. MY asus P5B dlx bios has an option to recognize ram upto 8GB, I have to enable memory remap feature in bios.

I want to allocate 2.5 gb photoshop & keep 1.5 gb for the OS & other applications. Will I have any other problems in this 4gb setup???

Reply soon as I paln to buy the ram this evening.
Thanks

Great ! go ahead and buy the RAM.. well there are many problems with 4 Gb , but both XP and Vista are having patches to RUN and SHow your full 4 GB RAM, as a 32bit OS also supports till 4 GB RAM, you got to enable the remap in BIOS , and install the patches from M$.. after that no probs ...

The price is pretty good.. (for 800 MHz)

any chennai or banglore dealer (addres/tele nos. website) who can ship to delhi??

Is it true that XP-pro sp2 -32bit can use all 4gb but will display in my computer properties as3.25gb, I assume that its same in vista too, but does it actually uses 4gb or not using the bios remap & the 3gb switch?

I want to upgrade another 2gb, my asus P5b -dlx supports memory remap function in BIOS to see all 4gb.
Should I upgrade to 4gb (hope I don't waste 1gb) or better upto 3gb only?

Well Not really, PAE and 3GB Switch will allow x86 platform too access more than 4GB RAMs,

take a look in these links,

Physical Address Extension

Some more detailed Tech Stuff :p *www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/platform/server/PAE/pae_os.mspx

But personally I would say yeah when running 4GB + some Video Memory, opt for x64 platform !!!!

I got another 2 GB ram for 2500/- each
& installed it Xp SP2shows it as 2.93 gb

PAE is enabled but photoshop is not yet seeing any increase so I guess I need to enable the 3/gb switch.

Right?

Update
I enabled the 3gb switch & now photoshop can see 2584mb of ram & balance from 3Gb I guess xp is using it.

I want to know in this case (PAE+3gb switch)
Is my XP-sp2 using the 1gb leftover ram apart from 3gb or not????
or I am wasting 1gb?

What I can see right now Windows XP is not detecting the total RAM, so may be 3 GB Switch is not working for sore reason..

if its possible then please post what u have in ur boot.ini file... !! :)

This is what I have in my boot ini
----------------------------
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional 3GB" /fastdetect /3GB
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
--------------------

I have added a seperate line as 3gb so I can choose which option I want to boot with.
MY asus p5b supports upto 8gb, but redaing on asus forum I understand following
bios "memory remap" function should remain disabled for 32 bit XP

Further I have a dual boot xp-vista & vista is able to see 3007mb ram but its crashing again & again showing BSOD

Technical info
stop: 0x0000008E(0XC0000005,0XE1CE752B,0XE471B0B4,0X00000000)

This is what I did.
-------------------
At the command prompt [cmd.exe] type in:

BCDEDIT /set increaseuserva 3072
----------------------
whats causing Vista to crash???

Anyone Have Any Answer Related To This 4gb Problem

I have concluded that no u wont be able to utilize 4gb fully & worse case is that both vista & XP run slower with 4gb now in comparison to 2gb............strange but true.

Under 64bit you surely can use full 4gb but only if you have any application which is capable of using it & made in 64bit architecture, otherwise additional 2gb is waste of money & time.
