Does LED tubelight break or explode?

Had an LED tubelight installed a few months ago. Today I suddenly heard a glass breaking sound & what happened was the plastic caps on both sides of the light are missing & also the light is not working.

Once in my lifetime the LED bulb in my bathroom fused with a nasty blow. The case broke open and shattered to pieces when I pressed ON button. Thankfully it was bathroom light so I was outside while pressing the button.

It’s not common but not impossible. I do not completely trust the LED lighting system that runs on 230V.

Unfortunately, a broken piece means no warranty claim. Try it though. Or if the customer care email is provided on manufacturer site, share photos with them.

Ideally these LED lighting systems are supposed to have overcurrent protection. So, they are supposed to fuse silently.

Guessing...
May be he is okay with LED when they are 5v/12v.
Since it's just few months old, it should be under warranty. Try to claim and see what they have to say about it.

5v/12v means? I think the LED tubelight was under 20W

You're talking about Watt (W), he is talking about Volt (V). You know 230V is standard in India.

LEDs run on constant small DC voltage and current. Since India has 230V AC, there’s a power driver circuit whose one end is 230V AC connecting to mains and other side is DC or whatever it takes to run the LED tube and bulb w/o a transformer inside it. This may develop fault. And while it’s supposed to fuse silently, in rare cases may blow, as it happened in my bathroom possibly in case of a surge.

I suspect same thing has happened with your tube light.

LED lights that run on 12V DC batteries and at output of PC SMPS are one type and I was just referring to those which plug in directly to 230V AC like those tube lights and bulbs in our house. In rare cases there also might be some fault in wiring or loose contacts.

That’s what I meant when I said I don’t trust LED tubes and bulbs that run on 230V as there’s a very small but a probability of it fusing with a blow. At least I experienced it in my house. I can’t explain exactly why it happened but it happened. It could be that some circuit component failed/burnt, the heat caused some expansion of glass or plastic material or if there's any inert gas inside it and it broke.

Did the MCB trip in your house when it happened?

Don't worry.

LED produce more heat compared to Fluorescent tubelight for the same wattage. Heat degrades led life.
LED have more lifespan (60k hrs) compared to Fluorescent(10k hrs)
LED, 5 times more efficient.
20 watt led bulb = 36-40 watt CFL

LEDs in the led bulb are of poor quality.
The driver circuit always gets damaged in the LED bulb. Mostly capacitors. Poor quality components used in the driver.
Driver circuit required to step down and convert 230v ac to 5v to 40v dc accordingly to LEDs in bulb.
Even a single damaged LED in a led bulb can damage all LEDs.

In CFL, tube, starter, choke are 3 components which you can replace externally and easily compared to LED bulbs.
In LED bulbs you can replace the driver circuit and replace LEDs but it's comparatively difficult for a normal user.

Actually I'm also searching for the same.
The only option is to go for branded models.
There are no led bulb YouTube reviewers like SMPS, power supply reviewers.
For Branded ones you could go with "Philips" or "Havells"...but no guarantee about the incidents as commented by @patkim and @soorajdigit.

230v AC supply to 5v-24v DC supply circuit mostly the reason for led failure.

Reading 1st posts again, it might be a capacitor blasted. Happens many times with SMPS too.

For Branded ones you could go with "Philips" or "Havells"...but no guarantee about the incidents as commented by @patkim and @soorajdigit.

Exactly no guarantee.
