I tried on my phone and tablet through the Play Store. There are many similarly-named apps, but no ES File Explorer. What happened to it ?

Google probably removed it
QuickPic is back on Google Play Store while ES File Explorer disappears

Great alternative: [APP][2.0+] MiXplorer v6.x Released (fully-featured file manager)

How do we know that it is a safe app ?
It is actually available on play store too for a price of Rs.380 for people who want to support the developer as it is quite popular on xda forums but donation is only available via bitcoin which many can't do.

I have removed ES File explorer long time ago. It didn't took me long to figure that it's an app that is spreading cancer. The amount of bloat that the app started to come with, it was a no brainer conclusion.
I moved to Solid File Explorer. It's a 14 day trial. But the pro version comes to around Rs 10 in sales (Rupees Ten). Also works on Android TV.

Have you guys used Solid Explorer? I personally use the pro version of it and it works good enough. If you have root, you can also browse your root FS plus it has support for various cloud storage providers and FTP/SFTP protocol support for remote file storage. You can also transfer data from your phone to any device by hosting a FTP server on your phone from Solid Explorer.

Yes, Solid Explorer is the most used by Rooting community, where they know what file they are changing for customization & tweak. Not for Naive users though.

All the features I've mentioned are good for non-root users as well.
Yes it has and the same features are also present in other File Explorers. Only thing is to be cautious while using Solid in system partition because it gives more privilege to users in system r/w access as compared to other explorers.

FX File Explorer for me.. using it for 2-3 months..
Only problem I found till now that, I can't get more options for sharing .apk file.. sharing apk from bluetooth or any other apps..

I had Solid Explorer (with license) and froze it long time back
Came to know about that while switching over to Havoc OS 3.0 last night.
Now using it with MiXplorer.

Does it have any method to give and take files from PC ?
I tried the file sharing in FX Explorer today.
You just have to click the Web Access icon on FX explorer and connect to same WiFi network.
And then open your computer and type the IP address given in FX and voila you are connected with your phone storage on Browser. :)

If you are on same network you can use SMB feature..
In MiXplorer you get more speed compare to FX,
I use both.
For large files I use MiX for smaller I use FX (because of UI)

Its not that good compared to MiXplorer IMO. I create ftp server and hotspot (if required) and don't need to turn GPS/bluetooth on to share files. This is another app I use to quick share stuff between my own devices:

I know it is not as good but for a typical person not knowing anything other than app install from playstore(useful if other device belongs to such person), it is fine(mixplorer playstore version is not free).
