Extending WiFi range With second WiFi router and LAN cable. Help !!!!!!!!

Hello

I want to extend my WiFi signal range with installing second Router and using a Ethernet cable.

I have two houses about 20 meter apart, one house has TP Link wifi router installed, on the second house i get wifi signal to medium to low strength and some time no signal at all.

So i want to install another router to my second house and use an ethernet cable to connect the second router with main router, so that in second house i can use internet without any hassle.

I am thinking to buy a good quality dual band 5 Ghz wifi router and connect it with ethernet cable and use in my second house.

Request you all expert to help me on this, what kind of cable should i get and what is the best router i can get.

I am thinking to get at least 25 meter cable so that i do not fall short of cable.

Both house has 2 mobile, 1 Smart TV, one Laptop and 1 Desktop each, so both house will use same internet but with separate router.

Please help me here.

Thanks

Currently i have TP Link WR841N, very very old, and some time hangs a lot, i have to go there and manually restart it.

Also some time back i installed DD-WRT, and again installed the TP link rom or firmware, however it now shows TP link but i am not sure whether its only original tp link rom or dd wrt, please see the image attached, in model

also its old so i am thinking to use it as second extender, and get a new primary router

Yes it is tp-link now. You can check by matching firmware version build & release no. with firmware available on tp-link site.

what is wifi repeater, booster and extender

is it same as wifi router
Booster is a general term so you can ignore it. The basic difference between a repeater & extender is that wifi repeater reduces the bandwidth of wifi network by half(it receive wifi signal from primary wifi network & then rebroadcast it on same channel thus bandwidth is reduced by half because half is used for receiving wifi from primary router). Since you are planning on connecting the secondary router via lan wire to primary router so extender is the one you should get.

Most important thing, what is the budget for getting two new routers.

i already have one old TP WR841N router, which i will use as secondary router

For Primary router i am planning to buy a new, but not sure which one to get, i want something future proof and good range,
I need your help with this one

Also i will buy 25 meter ethernet cable to connect both,

so i am only buying a new router and ethernet cable, not yet decied which one to get, hence asking you all here

I'm not sure you can use two routers for that.
However, use an extender/repeater for this.

Main router would be configured with ip details
Use good router for this dual/triple band as you want it spread WiFi signal as far as possible. This is so the extender is able to catch the signal and boost it again.

invest in a good extender.

If distance between your router and extender is too long put another extender in middle to boost it further.

Use an app to check signal strength of existing router, you would know where you need to put the extender.

Yes you can provided secondary router supports access point mode(any decent wifi router nowadays support this) which is meant for sharing wifi connection using wired internet connection as input(aka primary & secondary router are connected via wire). Extenders & repeaters are primarily meant for sharing wifi connection wirelessly aka primary wifi router & secondary wifi router are not connected via wire.

P.S. using multiple extender is not suggested because in that situation you would be much better off using a mesh wifi system.

Wasn't aware about this.

If possible to lay cable between his two houses, this sure can be done.

20 meter distance can be achieved by Extender too.

Yes but wire is always better & more stable so it is preferred especially if it is possible to connect the two routers via wire.

thanks all

the thing is that my current TP link 841N is getting old, so anyway i am planning to get a new router as my main router, i already have LAN cable lying around, will check if it works

so once i get a good primary router, my current TP link can be used as secondary router, hence i am not into getting extender

also if i have to put extender or booster, then it has to be in range of existing router Right ??
which also difficult as i can not set extender in any open area outside my house, as i live in a area where its not sage to keep any thing outside fear of stealing

i guess TP link supports access point option

so which one should i get,

also there are 3 -4 walls in my main house

What if budget can be extended to 5k.. I want a permanent solution so at least few years I don't have to worry

First decide your main priorities. Range is always a subjective & unpredictable matter so if that is your main priority then for lesser budget it is better to go with wired access point router using cheap secondary wifi router & for higher budget it is better to go with mesh system. If you want a good primary router anyway with a budget of 5k then tplink Archer C7 is currently available for exactly 4999.
