Off the beaten track
My laptop was stolen last month. I want to buy a new computer for my work/ downloads etc. I am very confused if to buy desktop or laptop. My friends are asking me to buy laptop. But i want to buy a desktop only.

I will stay in a flat/pg with lot of strangers walking around. I will relocate only once a year afterwards. Also my work does not require laptop.

My reasons for choosing desktop are this

1. easy to use(big screen/keyboard)
2. safety from theft
3. more powerful and fast
3. easy upgrade/downgrade
4. somewhat portable (can be carried in a mid size suitcase)
5. almost half the price of a laptop

Am i missing anything in the above list?

I have not owned a desktop before. Is there a problem if i buy desktop instead of laptop?

Is there any reason why i should buy laptop and not desktop?

All thinkdigit gurus, help me please.

Unless you are a gamer, there is not much a desktop can do. To prevent theft, get Kensigton lock along with laptop and if you wan big screen, just get a 19" display and connect your latop to the display.

I agree with you, desktops are cheaper, faster and much easier to upgrade down the line. if you have problems, all you need is google, go to a shop buy the part and install it yourself instead of the relying upon the company to deliver you parts. put the extra money in the bank or buy a bigger screen

If you want a small form factor and dont play games, you can opt to get the small and slim models like the Dell Studio Slim Desktop.

Something weird about your post and the points you mentioned!
1,2,3 and the second 3 are definitely in favor of desktop.
4 is where it gets weird. Its OK if you have never owned a desktop, but haven't you ever seen one??? :???:
When was a desktop ever so portable enough that you can fit it in a suitcase??? :???: :???:
5 - Lets say you go for a laptop... then, you want a laptop which is half the price of a laptop???

Sorry for being picky!!!

@hellstorm. He meant a biiiig suitcase (a 5ft suitcase) :)

anyways, there are things like Mac Mini and HTPC's that you can carry to your friends place and use.

Well if you have a 5 feet suitcase and new Tata Magic with you get a PC man. :mrgreen:Laptops lack the definite horse that a PC's have, also better gaming, more customizable, cheaper upgrades, flexibility of changing whatever parts you want at whatever time you want and the works. But if its for your work where you have to travel a lot go for a laptop.
Compaq one's good and cheap. You can get an awesome config which would be at least 5k-6k cheaper than other brands like HP or Dell. After sales support is good since it is now owned by HP! If you want a laptop go for a laptop with an inbuilt GPU of nVidia or ATI.

And if you want a PC we can help you with the config! Most importantly what's your budget for a laptop and budget for a PC??
