Well, I had a WD 320 GB HDD; but after 7 months of usage...some of the sectors got corrupted (I was getting a CRC error when trying to copy data).

I think this is probably because my idiot friend unplugged the USB cable when he realized that a file was taking too long to copy to the drive.

Check WD passport essential or Seagate freeagent go. Both are good.

Go for Seagate GoFlex Ultraportable external HDDs. I have one 500GB drive that came with a USB2 adapter/cable. I also have one 1.5TB GoFlex ultraportable drive that came with a USB3 cable/adapter. The cable/adapter is interchangeable so that you can use the drives with USB2 or USB3 ports. The three screenshots that give the transfer speeds is below.

The fourth one which is "As a USB2 device into USB2 port", the transfer speed is the same as in the third screenshot. ( can't upload this since maximum allowed is three :-( )

You can see all and the conclusions in my post at Transend USB 3.0 PCI Card - Page 2 - Windows 7 Forums

Dont buy Seagate HDD instead buy WD or Hitachi bcoz their RMA Service so
pathetic almost take 1month to replace & give a HDD with label as
"Seagate Certified Repair" so that u cant sell it to anyone....:x

whereas WD gives a new HDD in RMA

^^ Though i don't know about seagate rma, wd's service is terrific. They replaced my brother's wdtv hd with a new one with just one phonecall to its service centre. They gave an absolute new product completely sealed. Same should be with harddisks.

It should be easy as HDD has major RMA setback.

^^ The wd elements series does not have a glossy finish. I guess newer passports are not glossy anymore. So they are less prone to scratches now.

Go for WD. Check for USB3 drives. They will deliver you teriffic speeds.

I don't want to start a new thread , so I'll post my question here too.

I need to buy a 1TB external HDD. Since most of you seem to recommend WD , can you please suggest me a model? I need a HDD that requires external power (I'm on a tight budget).

500GB Western Digital Elements USB Hard Disk Drive WD - 2700 Rs
eBay India: 500GB Western Digital Elements USB Hard Disk Drive WD (item 200562314237 end time 07-Mar-2011 15:33:36 IST)

passport is old series & elements is new one.

Do you mean to say old series of passport has USB 3.0 & new series elements have only 2.0 ?
