You have to upgrade the Ram to DDR3 standard; DDR is history and DDR2 is also obsolate.
Also post the detail of the PSU...I'm guessing it is a local PSU from brands like Intex or Frontech. In that case you need a new and good one.

Here is my suggestion:-

AMD Athlon II X4 635 3 GHz @ 4.5K
Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2P (rev. 3.1) @ 2.8K
Corsair 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3 @ 1.2K
LG 22X SATA DVD Writer @ 0.8K
FSP SAGA II 500W PSU @ 2.2K
Zebronics Bijli cabinet w/o SMPS @ 1.1K
Sapphire/MSI HD 6670 1GB MB GDDR5 @ 5.2K

Total 17.8K

Avoid PSUs from local brands like Intex, Frontech, Supercomp, Zebronics etc; they are nothing but crap and cannot be trusted when a discrete Graphics card is being used.
Get the FSP SAGA II PSU as I've suggested. I have provided you a dedicated Graphics card HD 6670 1GB GDDR5 which will provide you decent gaming performance with all the current games.

The consensus is that the PSU has to change.

Apart from budgetary considerations, is there anything else that should make me go for AMD instead of Intel i3?

Thanks.

BMG ftw!!
Performance is the only thing for which you would want to go for Intel. But at your budget........

Does this board have an IDE port or will I need an IDE-SATA covertor to use my IDE HDD?

Aso, would CX400 Corsair be a better PSU despite its lower power rating?

Thanks.
