Connect a Lan cable from desktop to laptop.

Open network connections from desktop, double click on Lan connection.

Click on TCP/IP, Properties.

Select use the following IP.

IP - 192.168.1.2
subnet - will be automatically captured
Gateway - 192.168.1.1

Follow the same process in the laptop.

IP alone will change like, 192.168.1.3

Now access the IP, 192.168.1.3 from your desktop, your laptop shared folders and files will be shown, copy the files from desktop to laptop.

Just my 2 cents (ya paise:D)
For direct PC to PC connection normal LAN cable wont work; for this a crossover cable is needed. These IP settings will do, but again gateway isn't needed.

I too was wondering about the lan cable, just waited for you to confirm that he needs a cross-over cable or buy a USB2USB transfer cable(dont know what exactly its called) I have one from a company named Bafo.

its the normal LAN cable only..only last 3 of the 8 wires are reversed at one end..just tell the shopkeeper from where to buy the cable to bind the 2 ends accordingly.

I had been using LAN cable to communicate between the Laptop and Desktop for a couple of years. Its faster and easy once you set up the network.
