Right off the assembly line
Hey guys, I am in a dillema.
I have a compaq presario desktop
(bought in march 2003) with AMD Athlon XP 2000+ andsome old motherboard(cant remember:wink:) and a 40GB 5400 rpm HDD with 16mb onboard graphics and 384mb ddr266 ram.
Let me divide the problem in 2 parts.
1. I want to change my computer. But should I go for an upgrade (processor+MB+HDD+Graphics Card+RAM) or should I rather buy a new branded PC? Which is better in terms of price effectiveness and in terms of reliability? (if branded, do give some suggestions with the specifications.)
My upgrade budget is Rs. 15000-20000, Branded budget is Rs. 45000-47000:cool:
I want the PC to be future proof(future as in 2yrs approx), ie. easily upgradeable. Please do mention the motherboard campany and chipset.
2. Is it true that an upgrade is a risky option(the components may not be as reliable as in a branded pc)?
I would be most greatful to you guys if you help me on this problem:grin:. I'm waiting for your suggestions guys.:smile::smile:

Hope he already have a monitor..
Go for KPowerMania's config...Best VFM...

First, if you actually ask the question "is assembled better or branded", that means you know little or nothing about computer parts. If that is the case, you would find it difficult to troubleshoot the PC if something goes wrong. So I strongly suggest you get a branded PC unless you have a friend who has sufficient knowledge about PCs to help you out.

Metal anyhow, assembled is better than branded, if he gets any problem, he will take to the shopkeeper and get it checked there. Eventually all companies are supporting their products.

Thanks a ton guys! Your help was much needed by me.
Actually, I used to be an avid techgeek about a year or so ago, but now the pressures of Indian school curriculum(10th and +2) have diverted me from all this. So I was not in touch with the current developements in technology. Hence the dilemma.
The thing is, my father was told by the shopkeeper at a computer store that assembled PCs were not much good in terms of reliability and servicing. So my father became anti to an assembled PC. I knew, with my prior knowledge(a lot courtesy DIGIT), that I could build my dream machine if I go for assembled. Your posts have changed papa's mind, and I am very happy now.
God bless you all!
