The 2.00 Firmware Update for the PS3, due to come out in the next few days, will add the Information Board to your XMB. Once it's activated, headlines will begin scrolling in the upper right-hand corner of your screen. Sony plans to use the Information Board to release information on games, hardware, Store updates, and so forth, but you can choose not to display it if you'd rather not be bothered.

Remote Start is an upgrade to the Remote Play feature, which lets you access your PS3 from your PSP. Previously, your PS3 had to be turned on for it to work, but now you'll be able to start it up remotely, as long as it's in standby mode. When you're done playing, you can put it back on standby.

The update also gives you the ability to set themes, as well as creating custom playlists for your music and photos.

The PS3 is a good option as a HD player. The recent software update improved the DVD video playback and 2008 update will enable it to act as a PVR. What Hi-Fi? mag gave it a full 5-star rating, and that too just for its movie and music playing abilities without considering gaming. Its also the cheapest HD player available.
