I am not able to get the latest nvidia driver working on my Dell 1720 (nvidia 8600M GT). The driver works without any problem after installtion untill i restart my system. On restart system goes into low resolution mode (800X600). Here is my xorg.conf file generated automatically with nvidia-xconfig utility during installtion.

Code:
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder57) Thu Jul 17 18:39:19 PDT 2008

add after Depth 24 a new line

Modes "1280x1024" "1280x960" "1024x768"
add others as per ur need,

just an advice see if there is a backup of your previous xorg in the same folder (/etc/X11/). If so the just edit/add/replace the parts in it to current one.

Always save the best config files to another drive for quick backup

The resolution is not the only problem. Even I am not able to run any opengl based application/game.

this is my xorg.conf see what you can figure out with your barely any text xorg.conf file :p
Code:
# xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Bold green part you may like to paste into your xorg.conf
DRI part will solve the direct rendering issue, or may be not

The driver was working fine with ubuntu 7.10. May be xorg version in Ubuntu 8.04 conflicting with 173 nvidia driver. Here is my output of glxinfo

See if putting composite disabled helps
*ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=...nsion+GLX"+missing+on+display+":0.0.

Direct your queries to Ubuntu Forum for prompt reply, there may be more apt answers will be given.

Paste your xorg log (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) here

aur yeh rinku kaun hai :D

Resistance is Futile.
your xorg.conf is missing the AddARGBGLXVisuals extension.
add the AddARGBGLXVisuals, RenderAccel and composite extensions. add them.

here's my xorg.conf.

If this doesnt work ,Are you installing the drivers via Restricted driver manager ? Try the manual install of drivers - it will remove all existing drivers and install again. To install manually, get the .run file of the driver from nvidia's site. you will need kernel-header and kernel-sources as well.
Copy the .run file to your home directory. Open the terminal, switch to console mode by typing
Code:
sudo init 3
and once in console login, switch to your home directory, exec the run file using
Code:
sudo sh <name-of-run-file>
