Hi All

First of all I would state the intended use of the desktop :

* Academic use : Run computationally intensive matlab programs requiring high level of parallel execution
* Budget can be around 1 lakh rupees.

Other requirements :

* Should run Windows
* Maybe a core i7 hexa-core (Core™ i7-4960X Processor Extreme Edition ?) (is the i7 octa-core commercially available ?)
* Requires lots of RAM (maybe around 32 Gb) - So need an optimal mother board and optimal RAM configuration : 4x8 ? 16x2 ? What frequency RAM to use ?
* Proper power supply ?
* SSD ?

And a doubt :

* Would having a good graphics card help in Matlab processing ?

Thanks in advance. :)

Fill up the questionnaire- Asking for new PC help? ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS FIRST

1. What is the purpose of the computer? What all applications and games are you going to run? (Stupid answers like 'gaming' or 'office work' will not work. Be exact. Which games? Which applications? Avoid the word 'et cetera.')
Ans:
Academic purpose : Computationally intensive matlab programs requiring high degree of parallel execution.

2. What is your overall budget? If you can extend a bit for a more balanced configuration, then mention this too.
Ans:
100K

3. Planning to overclock?
Ans:
No

4. Which Operating System are you planning to use?
Ans:
Windows 7 64bit

5. How much hard drive space is needed?
Ans:
1 SSD + 1 Magnetic drive (1TB + combined)

6. Do you want to buy a monitor? If yes, please mention which screen size and resolution do you want. If you already have a monitor and want to reuse it, again mention the size and resolution of monitor you have.
Ans:
No

7. Which components you DON'T want to buy or which components you already have and plan on reusing?
Ans:
Will be reusing monitor keyboard and mouse.

8. When are you planning to buy the system?
Ans:
Immediate requirement.

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
Ans:
Will be done by an assembler.

10. Where do you live? Are you buying locally? Are you open to buying stuff from online shops if you don't get locally?
Ans:
Bangalore. Not sure if the assembler procures from elsewhere.

11. Anything else which you would like to say?

- I would like to go for the hexa core(Core™ i7-4960X Processor Extreme Edition?) ( or the octa core if those are commercially available) *www.techenclave.com/community/styles/default/xenforo/clear.png

- Would need 32Gb of RAM. 8x4 ? 16x2 ?

you dont intend to overclock and going with 4770k ? you are simply wasting a lot of cash there!
try the following.
i7 4790 - 20k
asus h97 pro - 9k
Kingston Hyperx blue 1600mhz 8gb x 4 - 18k
WD Cavier Black 1TB - 5.5k
samsung 850 evo 250 gb - soon to be announced and released!
seasonic s12 ii 520 - 4.7k
corsair 300r - 5.5k
CM Hyper 212x - 2.5k
i dont know you require a gpu or not. if no, the above rig is more than sufficient. and save the rest.

or wait for i7 5820k!!

Hi All

First of all, a big thanks for the replies. Please take a look at the below config, and maybe we can trim down a little to reach the goal. :)

Intel® Core™ i7-4930K 40.0 K

ASUS Rampage IV Extreme 35.0 K (Can someone suggest something cheaper that goes with the 4930K ?) OR
ASRock X79 Extreme6 20.5 K (???)

Corsair Vengeance 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 24.0 K
ZOTAC NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 2GB Graphics 18.0 K (Would this do any good for matlab ? Can this be avoided or use something lower ?)
Samsung S840 Pro 128GB 10.0 K
WD Cavier Black 1TB 6.0 K
Seasonic s12 ii 520 Power Supply 4.7 K
Corsair 300r Cabinet 5.5 K
CM Hyper 212 EVO 3.0 K (Is this needed ?)

This goes above the 100K budget as of now. Lets say that is OK for now. Can we trim this down a little ? :)

If we can go with the ASRock mobo and skip the graphics card, I think we have a winner. :)

I would suggest
I7 4790 k + Asus Maximus VII Hero

But if you want to go for more cores then
I7 5930k = 40k 403 - Forbidden Error
X99 yet to come in India I suppose = 403 - Forbidden Error
Zotac Gtx 750 Ti 2 GB = 11.5 Access Denied
Samsung 840 EVO 120 GB = 5k
Corsair Vengeance 8gb x 4 = 24k [or you can go for other options if cheaper than this
WD Cavier Black 1TB = 5.5k
seasonic s12 ii 520 - 4.7k = [go for higher models if you want to SLI in future]
NZXT Source 530 / Corsair 400 R - 6k
Noctua NH-D15 - 6.8k [will give good cooling equivalent to liquid cooling without the risks. but is huge]

It will cross your budget of 100k

or else you can go with i7 4790k + Asus maximus VII Hero and it will come in your budget but will compromise on the number of cores.

You can also look into AMD maybe

It is better if you can get a K series CPU and Overclock. That way it will be cost effective considering your needs and budget.

Don't think overclocking is an option as of now. The PC is for my lab and overclocking would be too much trouble at this point in time. :(

If overclocking is not an option then why are you buying k series processor? K stands for unlocked processor.
Better get i7 4790 + H97 Mobo combo will cost you less than 30k rs .

1) Which is better ? 4790K or the 4930K ?
2) Wont stock cooling suffice ?
3) 5930K available in India ? Also availability of a proper mother board is also a concern. If going for this option, please suggest a mother board that is readily available as well. :)
4) Another option I am looking into : 5820K + DDR4 RAM ? Need advice on a suitable motherboard here as well.
5) If going with the 4930K, should I go for the Asus mobo or the ASRockmobo ?

Anyhow, Thanks for the suggestions guys. But here is the deal, I don't have anymore time for research. I need to place the order today. *www.techenclave.com/community/styles/default/xenforo/clear.png Maybe in the next few hours...

1. 4930k is better than 4790k due to obvious reasons that it has more cores and hence better performance for your work.
2. Going for after market CPU cooler is a good choice if you are going to overclock, but you can add it on a later date too.
3. Yes 5930k is available in India. It needs X99 chipset motherboard.
4. Better go for 5930k if possible rather than 5820k

Here is where these new stuff are available. Call them before you order online though

How about this :

Intel® Core™ i7-5930K 40.0 K
Asus Rampage V Extreme X99 36.0 K
Gskill Ripjaws 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 37.0 K (Are these good ? Or should I go for Corsair/Kingston DDR4s ?)
ZOTAC NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 2GB Graphics 18.0 K
Samsung S840 Pro 128GB 10.0 K
WD Cavier Black 1TB 6.0 K
Seasonic s12 ii 520 Power Supply 4.7 K
Corsair 300r Cabinet 5.5 K

Total : 157K

Think I will go with stock cooling for now and get an after market cooler if I plan on some overclocking ? Will that be fine ?

Again... In a hurry... have to place the order soon.... Please advice. :)

I couldn't find other companies of DDR 4 ram available in India. You can try searching more though

For GPU I suggest Zotac GTX 750 Ti cause it has better CUDA compute capability than gtx 760 , 780, titan and all other nvidia desktop gpus
Source : CUDA - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If you want to add multi gpu in future then you should go for a better PSU that will provide you more room for upgrade .

For cabinet, just make sure you have got enough room to add big air/liquid coolers

1) GTX 750 has a "compute capability" of 5.0 and the GTX 760 has 3.0. Which, from what I understood, means that 2 features are not available in the 760 which is available in the 750 : "funnel shift" and "dynamic parallelism". Now I have no idea if I would need that. :D

On the other hand GTX760 has more Cuda cores than the GTX750 (1344 vx 640)

But then the 750 is cheaper than the 760 (11K vs 18K)

In all, it seems to be a complicated decisions to take. :p I will keep that as the last one to make and do what I feel like just before placing the order. :)

2) Not planning on adding a second GPU or overclocking as of now. So the 520 Watt power supply should suffice right? :)

You can choose the GPU which suits you better for your work but 750 does have relatively less watt consumption. Just go for ZOTAC brands cause they have the option for extension of warranty to 5 yrs.

Yeah if you dont want to set up a multi gpu a two way sli or a 3 way sli since your motherboard and processor does support these features then you are fine with 520 w
