Could you give some more details on the MKV file? Cause if it is some sort of x264 codec, then it doesn't behave very well in an avi. Also, why do you need it in avi?

Avi2DVD is a utility that allows a user to convert avi/ogm/mkv/wmv video files into DVD, VCD or SVCD formats. It can also add subtitles and a navigation menu.

The program is a GUI frontend which invokes a number of video editing and DVD authoring tools such as VirtualDub. The same principle is employed in the application Auto Gordian Knot.

AVI2DVD is completely free and the development is still in progress
