i hav a 120GB Seagate IDE HDD with me and it has bad sectors in it... i tried to fix them using built in check disk in XP and also using HDD regenarator but to no avail... i then tried using check disk with "recover bad secors" and nw i can use the hdd... i hav a doubt... during scanning it showed correcting file system and something like tat... so if i format the hdd will i hav to check disk again or is the dhh permanently fixed???? as bad sector is a physical problem of HDD...so softwares (like chkdsk with recover bad sector command) can only make the HDD temporarily usable by putting those damaged sectors aside...so ur HDD can arise problem again anytime...try low level formatting once when u'll format...if it still becomes unusable again then try chkcsk again...but i doubt if it'll make the HDD usable again...it's best to get the HDD replaced if it's within the warranty period
