It has surfaced on the forums of Chinese tech community PCInLife, that the RV790 rather effortlessly reached the 1 GHz mark, the slider-limit of Catalyst Control Center, sparking off fresh rumors that AMD partners may be creating a fresh niche of highly-overclocked cards shortly after Radeon HD 4890 comes to be. The overclocker reached speeds of 1 GHz (core) and 1125 MHz (4.50 GHz effective, memory). At the said speeds, the card was put through 3DMark Vantage with its eXtreme settings. It churned-out a score of X5480, which puts its performance somewhere between those of the GeForce GTX 280 and GeForce GTX 285. It should also be taken into account that the drivers RV790 users the world over have been using, are preliminary beta drivers. AMD plans to release Catalyst 9.4 with the release of Radeon HD 4890, which just may impact positively on the performance of the product.

Factory-overclocked cards based on ATI Radeon have since now been a formality. Even cards with the iconic HIS IceQ TurboX branding, haven't been known to have high (~15~20%) increase in clock speeds. With this feat surfacing, it has been established that the RV790 holds the capability to reach some very high clock speeds. On course to the 1 GHz mark, the overclocker at PCInLife comfortably reached 925/1025 MHz (X5021) and 950/1075 MHz (X5202). It sounds plausible that these speeds could be the speeds factory-overclocked cards come at, with a branding system similar to what NVIDIA uses: a tier-1 (light overclock), tier-2 (moderate overclock), tier-3 (high overclock), and tier-4 (extreme overclock). At any rate, this is turning out to be an exciting fortnight for the high-end GPU industry.

Oh , just now they launched GTX295 oh no again Nvidia on backdoors

Ati RocKz

But the poster says it's preformance lies between GTx280 and GTX 295.It isn't above GTX 295.

Still good news for gamers as we will see some stiff competition.(Provided these ATi cards find proper drivers )

ati always had problem with their drivers...the graphic cards did so much well, but their drivers were too bad to utilise the card's power..

ya , but prices are low when compared to GTX 295 for 10% extra performance always Nvidia prices are higher

Ya, But considering the driver and game support Nvidia always has the edge over Ati cards.
These two factors undermine Ati cards true potential. :(

Here's more:-

Radeon HD4890 overclocks to 1GHz+
AMD’s RV790 will probably be remembered as the first GPU that will easily overclock to over 1GHz core clock.

Some partners will ship overclocked cards but 900+ MHz should be the fastest clock out of the box which with some little help of the overdrive tool, you might get the chance to go over the magical 1000MHz barrier.

With water-cooling, we might be getting over 1000MHz easier, but we are not sure if the high clock should be enough to beat GTX 275. Nvidia’s partners will of course overclock their GTX 275 cards and again give AMD a run for its money.

Nvidia’s 1000MHz+ clock will have to wait for 40nm we reckon.

4890 x2 = bye bye gtx 295
There won't be any HD4890 X2, sources confirm.

What's the temp with 1Ghz clock speed ?

I remember those days when HD 4850 & HD 4870 cards easily reaches upto 85-90C with stock cooling & probably for the low stock fan spped. Then 3rd party maufacturers released their cards with custom cooling solutions & the heating issue gone away.

It runs stable with reference fan set to 100% with 1GHz Core speed and 4500MHz Memory Speed.
So temps aren't exceeding 89C most probably.

But with cooling such as VAPOR-X or Dual SONIC, we might see higher clocks but less than 70C temps.
