Getting rid of a virus trying to open links.

Hello.

A friend's laptop caught a virus which is trying to access multiple links to download files. His current antivirus, Avast, keeps blocking the links. I am unable to figure out if it's an extension for browser doing this or something else. I have recommended to him a full system scan and a boot time scan. What else could/should be done to get rid of this virus completely?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

PS: His is a laptop of a 'normal' computer user - full of unneeded programs, files, etc.

The recommended option is to format C drive & reinstall windows & a new AV(try Avira this time).The next best option is to use kaspersky rescue cd.

Run "AdwCleaner" followed by a mbam scan. That should solve the problem. Safe mode is recommended.

MalwareBytes AntiMalware is surprisingly efficient at catching malwares where other A/Vs miss. before you try anything else, try this.

if it is a virus, no. virus itself may have got backed up into system restore folder previously.
