Desktop power consumption worries - bill shock

sling-shot

Wise Old Owl
This month I got a nice bill shock on receiving my electricity bill and it was 4900 odd. The used units were mentioned as 800. This was for 2 month billing cycle.

Here domestic tariff is on slab based calculation. Until around 600 units per bill the charges are as per domestic rates but beyond that it enters commercial zone and also flat rate. So bill shoots up exponentially.

I do not use air conditioner. The only thing I suspect is my desktop which has seen almost 24h per day use in the past bill cycle.

How much electricity would my desktop be guzzling?

What are your experiences regarding desktop's power consumption?

The specifications of my PC are as per my signature.
AMD Athlon X2 3600+
Biostar motherboard
AMD ATi Radeon 4670 graphics (no external power required)
2 SATA internal hard drives
Dell S2240L IPS flatscreen monitor
Creative SBS370 2.1 speakers
3 GB DDR3 RAM
LG DVD Writer (rarely used)
2 250 GB USB external hard disks (always connected)

Except your Power supply unit's details you've mentioned everything. !!

Details of your PSU alone is sufficient to calculate you max power consumption..... Please provide that...

Something is wrong with your power data

Assuming the average consumption to be 300w.

For 1 hour = 300wh = 0.3Kwh
For 10 hours =3Kwh = 3 Units

Assuming 30 days = 3*30 = 90

So max power consumption will be 100Units by your system.

Do you have any heater at home switched on frequently/continously? or Leave Iron box on continously ?

Or else get you energy meter checked

It is not leaking now. Because in the last 3 days I have only used 11 units. Use of all other household items is as it was before.

I will keep monitoring the reading daily and look for any spikes.

Hmm..so the watt rating is calculated on hourly basis?
for e.g: a 60Watt bulb has 60wh reading?

and also the max desktop power consumption won't exceed the the given PSU rating like using a 450W SMPS?
