Anandtech makes head-to-head comparison of the much speculated AMD Quad core processors with Intel Kentsfield. The result: Intel beats AMD.
Who said AMD 4x4 is going to beat Intel?

Looks like AMD and Intel have swapped strategies. While Intel's quad core max wattage is less than 300W, For AMD, it is more than 600W. A 1000W SMPS is a must for AMD's 4x4.

This proccy is pure ****. It cannot match core2duo in some areas. Having two fans makes the environment extremely noisy.

AMD : it's time for them to design a new microarchitecture ASAP or they will be blown away.

Intel has now demoed 45nm core and this means more clock speed and lower proccy size, less amount of wattage.
__________
just found out that the problem with performance is not due to the proccy but it is due to BIOS on ASUS system. this new proccy uses NUMA, which has issue with ASUS mobo's BIOS.

From hexus.net:

We haven't fully tested megatasking or Windows Vista yet, so we don't want to definitively say Quad FX has had its bottom whipped by Intel's Core 2 Extreme QX6700. We should also wait until AMD and ASUS have fixed the NUMA issues in the L1N64-SLIWS mainboard BIOS before making an absolute declaration. But there were few areas in our testing so far where AMD's new quad-core platform came even close to Intel's with this pre-production preview system, despite the potential technical superiority of the platform.

As so much seems to hinge on the mainboard BIOS issues being fixed, it appears to us that AMD, like other manufacturers, has once again been at the mercy of ASUS. And it's worth pointing out that, as we reported here when ATI tried to bring to market its RD580 chipset, ASUS appear to be maintaining a track record of being woefully slow at supporting its partners at critical times.

Hanging, since 2004..
AMD enjoyed market when intel was in with sh1tty extra hot and mega power consumer prescotts. But now is the time for intel . AMD needs to do something really impressive now.

guys i'm no amd or intel fan, but do you think the 2X2 approach of 2 Core2 Extremes on Quad will win?they lost it in dual cores, remember?

That's coz its not a actual "Quad Core"...its more like 2*Dual Core...that communicate via the system bus....So it has higher latencies..

Yeah, even then it beats AMD's true quad core. Think what will happen when Intel builds a true quad core with all 4 cores with shared cache.

The ain't any true "Quad Core" by AMD....till now...

Think what will happen when Intel builds a true quad core with all 4 cores with shared cache.

That's what they are....All four cores can communicate directly with each other....and they have their independent caches...

AMD and Intel have used the same strategy for quad core proccy's

Intel : two core2duo's on a single chip
AMD: two X2's on a single mobo but as different proccy's.

AMD's 4x4 looks weak because it's NUMA architecture is not utilized by ASUS mobo. ASUS is going to release BIOS update and after that there will be significant performace increase.

The first true quad core CPU will be Barcelona.

This has four single cores on a chip, each core has it's own 512kb L2 cache and all of them share a 2MB L3 cache.

I heard that Intel's next major release will be in late 2007, their 45nm proccy's release.

AMD is going to release Barcelona in mid-2007 and this should end Intel's domination. I cannot say that AMD will take Intel crown but it will certainly stand head to head against Intel.

For more info on barcelona, visit *www.tgdaily.com/2006/12/01/amd_aims_to_reclaim_cpu_crown/

AMD's Barcelona will then compete with Intel's quad-core made from 45nm technology - higher clock speed, and even lower speed. Result: AMD will lose again!!!

45nm does not mean that AMD will lose. Intel was always ahead of AMD in shrinking the transistor size but AMD held the performance crown for years till now. More over AMD is closing this gap to 6 months (from 12 months) as it releases 45nm proccy by the end of 2007 (Intel : mid 2007). This should make the fight interesting.

AMD is now no.7 in semiconductor chip manufacuring. Intel lost 15% of it's market share to AMD and samsung. in 2005, AMD's was 15th. This leap is mainly due to aquisition of ATI by AMD.

sorry boss i think you are taking it wrong,

AMD haven't Launched 4*4 core uptill now,
so there is no way you compare AMD core DUO with Intel QUAD Core.
Let there QUAD core come out then compare dude.
