Why do u want to get a winchester or clawhammer...

You are the one asking for comparison between venice 3500 and opteron 146...

As for ur current question all "AMD athlon 64" of the same rating have the same performance..for ex. all "AMD Athlon 64 3000+" will give u the same rating no matter which core, no matter what frequency.

so
"AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 2.0Ghz s754"--any core
have the same performance as
"AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 1.8Ghz s939" --any core

this very much gives u the answer...

we choose cores because newer cores are improved in terms of overcloackability ant other reasons..

and mind it i said all processors of same range and same rating have same performance

"THIS DOES NOT MEAN"

that
"AMD Athlon 64 3000+"
has the same performance as
"AMD sempron 64 3000+".

And what about the opterons..please let me know (you can PM me) if they are available and when they ariive..I am interested in opteron 144/146.
Do take the trouble of letting me know

I think you have this mixed up. Socket 754 run at 1.8Ghz

I have noting mixed up....it's right...

u just check...

They may have the same performance but the heat dissipation and power consumption varies and i think u cant neglect that untill u have a good cabinet.
Anyways i got the 3500+ clawhammer, bcoz i got a antec cabinet.I started this topic bcoz it was pretty urgent for me and this was the best place to get the suggestions on it but then my friend helped me out. Thanks for replying anyways.

I will let u know as soon as they arrive.

Will post my new rig config later today

Yeah, my bad.

I usually dont get things mixed up with AMD procs..i play with them in and out...u can doubt me on other things...intel procs..PSU's etc...though... :p

i have a doubt .. ru sure that an amd athlon64 3000+ s939 1.8 ghz will have the same perfomance as an amd athlon64 3000+ s754 2.0 ghz ??

i was reading the specs here ,

and i saw there is a lot of diff between the s939 and s754 proccs like in terms of memory controller width , total procc to system bandwidth , hyper transport technology etc . how can the perfomance of both the sockets be same then ?? plz clarify. thanx.

that link is not working.....
anyhow good that u asked....
Firstly...I am sure of what i said

we know that clock speed is not the determining factor in the overall performance of the entire system...s754 is not as good as s939...for ex. the Hypertransport in s754 is 800Mhx max but in 939 it is 1000Mhz...also there is a difference is memory controller...For this reason..If we consider 2 processors...with clock speed 2.0 Ghz...same L2 cache then the processor on s939 will perform better than the processor on socket 754 inspite of the fact that we have taken processors on same artitecture...because there is difference as mentioned above....The rating system of AMD is such that if it it rated 3000+ then it is based on the performance of the system...Now it is obviously evident that to match the performance of a 1.8Ghz processor on s939 on s754 we will need a processor of higher speed...we find that a processor of 2.0Ghz on s754 gives that performance....and hence AMD has rated it this way....

I once again want to clarify that this DOES NOT mean that all the AMD 3000+ processors have the same performance....but all the 3000+ of the same class have the same performance...irrespective of socket..L2 cache etc..

its probably because of the single channel memory controller on the s754. 800 mhz/1000 mhz hypertransport hardly makes a difference, but the 128 bit wide memory controller on the s939 might enable it to get more performance per megahertz
