He was probably testing how easy it was for someone to post links just after registering a a new account or to put such posts automatically to moderation queue.

There are spammers who put links in the about section of their profile or as a profile post. I don't think these are considered by moderation filter.

I know,I am hoping latest xenforo moderation filters have this feature to restrict links anywhere by a new user account.
