Hi Guys,

I have(d) the following configuration :

AMD AthlonXP 2400+ Processor
MSI KT4 Ultra Motherboard
1 GB DDR 266MHz Hynix RAM ( 512 * 2 )
Pixelview Geforce 4200+ Graphics card.

Recently my computer got short - circuited due to a power surge ( inspite of the UPS ) and burnt my motherboard, SMPS and UPS. The processor, RAM and AGP are intact and working.

Now I need a new computer within a Rs. 20,000 budget.

I had decided on the following processor and motherboard :

AMD AMD 64 - 3000+ 939 Socket processor costing 5700/-
ASUS A8N-E motherboard costing 5650/-

A friend of mine suggests the Intel Dual Core 2.8 GHz 800MHz, 2MB,LGA-HT costing 11400/-. I dont have an idea about the motherboard. Kindly suggest a motherboard.

I have the following queries for graphics card and RAM :

1 . My current RAM works. I tested it on another system. Can I use the same on this new sytem. Will there be a huge performance loss over a Transcend 1 GB-DDR-400 400MHz - PC3200 RAM ( 1 GB * 1 ) ?

2. Regarding the graphics card I need to choose between the ATI Radeon X 700 128 MB or GeForce 6600 GT 128MB. Which is better of the two ?

As for the SMPS I had thought of the Zebronics 360W Pure- Platinum Series and an equally good cabinet from Zebronics.

I ruled out the Dual core systems of AMD due to higher cost. I might go in for the Dual Core Intel if it comes within my budget.

My work majorly involves animation and 3D - graphics. I am a Graphics artist by profession.

Kindly provide me your suggestions. Any to my configuration are welcome, but kindly keep the budget ( Rs. 20,000 ) in mind.

1. Yes. Your old RAM is 266 Mhz, so it will be slower than a 400 Mhz chip.

2. Geforce 6600GT is far better than the X700.

A dual core system would be great for your work but even the Intel one won't fit in the budget even if you save your old RAM (Intel needs DDR2 RAM).

Rs. 11350 is already spent on 3000+ and A8N-E. That leaves Rs. 8650 which is just enough to buy a 6600GT and a PS.
