There are many things which we have to do for promoting an application.
1. Make facebook page of your app.
2.App must have a Twitter handle.
3.App reviews(by submitting your app for reviews on many sites)
4.App directory.

I think best option is Forum and than Social media since forum is free and for promotion in Social media you need to pay big amount for advertisement.
