I am going to run Linux mint and opensource editing softwares . I think you got the idea.... I am broke! If travelling was free, i would still not leave my couch :p

1. What is the purpose of the computer?
Ans: Image and Video editing.

2. What is your overall budget?
Ans: 10k...i would have it under 5k if possible ...but thats unreasonable i guess

3. Planning to overclock?
Ans: No

4. Which Operating System are you planning to use?
Ans: Linux Mint

5. How much hard drive space is needed?
Ans: 500 GB

6. Do you want to buy a monitor?
Ans: No. Already have a 24" monitor.
7. Which components you DON'T want to buy or which components you already have and plan on reusing?
Ans: I don't need keyboard, mouse, speaker and monitor.

8. When are you planning to buy the system?
Ans: In a couple of months. Don't plan on buying immediately

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
Ans: I have built few before.

10. Where do you live? Are you buying locally? Are you open to buying stuff from online shops if you don't get locally?
Ans: I live in Durgapur, West Bengal. Most likely will be buying from Amazon/Flipkart....or go to kolkata if needed

11. Anything else which you would like to say?
Ans: I was looking at few options because of the ridiculous budget that i have. My friend has an old PC lying with core i5 2500 and 4GB DDR3. It doesnt have a PSU or HDD . Last time i checked the motherboard wasnt receiving power. So may be the Motherboard needs to be replaced. But its almost 6 years old. Should i stick in a PSU and Mobo and get that up and running...or should i go with a Core 2 Quad (Open Box Processor) configuration.

yeah first try with your old i5 2500 config , create a bootable linux/windows live OS pen drive/micro sd try with that if you can't get hold of HDD , borrow any PSU from somewhere and try to run it..

if you can't just take the system to repair shop , even if mobo is faulty there are good chances it can be repaired depending upon which part failed .. it may be worth getting it repaired if it is good quality and doesn't cost much, which model is it ?

if not repair old mobo , then it is far better to simply buy a new motherboard for i5 2500 than going Core 2 route , as some of it seems available .. CPUs have lowest failure rates

problem with Core 2 config systems is getting motherboard , Don't for Zebronics, mercury G31,41 etc , a good quality 2nd hand gigabyte or asus is much better than these , but used is used so no guarantee .. used processors are so cheap though..
