Sound card - should I buy one?

Hello,
I am a new member of this forum.

I am confused as to should I buy an external sound card for recording audio.

I have an ASUS K55VJ-SX120D notebook PC and I want to create good quality video content ( Tutorials and stuff).

I have a Boya BY-M1 lavalier Microphone that I use to record audio for my videos, but, the audio quality is sub-standard in my experience. I am thinking of buying an external sound card to couple with my PC's on-board sound hardware, so that I could get much better results. My questions are;

  1. Is it a good idea to buy a sound card for this purpose? if not, please guide me through the steps I should take to make it better.
  2. Which sound card should I buy to have my needs fulfilled?
Please suggest a good mid-range sound card for me.

Regards.

Welcome to the forum! Well I am not in a position to give you any buying advice. So do wait for other forum members to respond, however in the meantime I just suggest that you also check for the following

1. What app are you using to record sound? Did you check for any settings therein like sound drivers like WASAPI, WDM, Primary Sound driver etc? Also does it come with any noise filters like Noise Gate setting?
2. What do you think is symptom of audio being sub-standard? Is there any cracking, background hiss, just low volume or may be poor audio quality (does not feel rich to the ears), or maybe it’s mono rather than stereo?
3. Did you attempt to adjust recording device properties like sampling rate, MIC Boost if available (On/Off), volume etc?
4. Do you have a built in microphone in your laptop? If yes, what’s the comparison between the two, when it comes to audio quality?
5. Are your audio device drivers up-to-date?
6. How are you playing back the audio content? Is it on laptop's default speakers, or external speakers or on headphones?

Do some troubleshooting to conclude convincingly that it’s the current audio hardware/software not up to the mark and then invest in a quality sound card.
