Regarding Raspberry Pi Components

I am interested in getting a Raspberry Pi system that will be used mainly for downloads (may be left on for the whole night at times).

This looks like a complete kit.
I will get a hdmi to dvi adapter that will be used initially to connect to my dell in2020 monitor. i have decided to use some sort of remote desktop later (without any monitor).

is this ok to buy or any other version is better?

also, thinking of getting a 16GB card instead of 8GB one. it comes to Rs.5,053.45 (Rs.4,790.00 with VAT (5.5 %) of Rs.263.45) minus Rs.100 for sharing their page on facebook.

Should i get the card (can be any make such as Samsung/Transcend/SanDisk) from them or buy from some other place (and later transfer the contents of 8 gb card to that card)?

i heard a lot about this but forgot. i have been transformed into ghazini :D

its a small computer invented for programming teaching to poor children. it has hardware of a mobile that runs a small but effective variant of Debian Linux known as Raspbian and few other software. since its very small, it consumers very less power hence we poor people can use them as download machines.
yes it can run a dongle too.
it looks like a project area because people have made lot many gadgets using the bare board. more at Raspberry Pi Projects

Why does this look like all my dreams coming true? *^*
>cheap
>so many features
>noob friendly
>better than my pD+Gt 210

I literally would have bought it and started developing if i wasnt preparing fot IIT. ;-;
and how does it run a dongle? does it automatically connect to the network?
i dont know much about these things so mind my noobness.

it comes with rj45 port so we can directly connect ethernet cable for wired connection. dongle i think will need some driver & settings like modem driver plus dial up connection etc. as this is linux. this can be looked up / asked here or at many other places (i have not tried this)

Yes you can. Even I got a kit like this while buying. But it was much cheaper and this looks somewhat costly. I'd suggest look at eBay once.

Allllright !
vidhubhushan: If you will fully utilize the added features of the B+ then go ahead. Performance wise there is no advantage over the older model @2.8k.

There are quite a few RasPi owners here. *www.digit.in/forum/show-off/177167-my-raspberrypi.html

I own one myself, I use it for learning and as a 24*7 downloader obviously

if you buy all the components separately from ebay it will cost you less.
Also 8 GB should be enough.

was checking that yesterday then got tired and closed it. will check again soon on ebay.

I am using raspberry pi since the last six months for download purpose. Do not buy complete kits/dvi-hdmi adapter etc. Just buy the latest B+ board, 8gb card, a preferably 2A power supply (I am using 1A and it works fine), a wifi adapter (I have edup) if you do not want to use the rj45 cable, and a 32gb pendrive for downloading. No need for keyboard or mouse or display. All can be done using putty without a monitor.

ty buddy for the reply. saw your post in the other thread. i have finalized to get these items only - pi from element14 India‎ (think i should get a heatsink too from them), sandisk card from fk / ebay / sd etc.. i have Ethernet cable. might buy a pen drive or reuse few old internal PC HDDs with usb cables. power adapter i need to finalize - which one and from where.

You can use a phone charger mini-USB power cord only. Just make sure its rated more than 1A, and more than 1.5A if you are using peripherals like USB mouse, WiFi adapter etc..

Check dealextreme for Heatsinks. Cheap, vfm ones are available there.

BTW you need a Sales Tax Registration Number to buy from element14. Retailers/Shopkeepers have it, individuals don't.
