1) What is your budget? (INR or USD)
up to $1200

2) What size & weight consideration (if any) would you prefer?
  • Desktop Replacement; 17"+ screen
  • weight is not an issue

3) What are the primary tasks you will be performing with this notebook?
A software engineer will use this to run CPU- and memory-intensive apps and run mini servers occasionaly.
And other generic stuff like MS Office suite, Zoom/Google Meet/Skype, Browsing, Youtube

5) Any typical configuration in your mind you're eying for ?
nothing as such, just looking for the best in the price range

4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
I have no specific brand preference and am looking for the best options within my price range. I am also open to lesser-known but reliable brands.

FYI, I am still using a Gigabyte laptop that I purchased during Black Friday sales in the USA five years ago, based on a recommendation from this forum. It still runs smoothly without any issues.

6) Anything else you would like to say?
  • Screen resolution - 1080p
  • Battery back up - could be anything, not a deal breaker
  • Purchase place - online in USA

I have Windows and MS Office with license, so not looking for any bundles.

For gaming laptop -
You will easily get a 4070 laptop for those prices, maybe even under $1000. So you can get well built model like a Lenovo Legion or Asus ROG easily with something like R7 8845HS/R7 7840HS as CPU for under $1200. Be on look out for great deals on RTX 4080 laptops, even if it is 1300 or 1400, that is a big jump up in performance from 4070 considering 4070 is just 10% better than 4060. 4060 laptops start at like $800 easy.

If GPU doesn't matter, can get Legion or ROG with a great CPU (Ryzen 9 7000/8000 H series) & upgrade RAM to 32GB or 64GB. Avoid Intel because of their issues & new their new CPUs for laptops haven't launched yet.

For non-gaming laptops - look for new Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 laptops or at least Intel ultra 9 185H. Snapdragon CPUs might have some compatibility issues, better avoid it for now unless you can be sure your apps won't have issues with it. Get at least 32GB RAM as RAM will be non-upgradable in these laptops or even in 14" gaming laptops.
