I was under the impression that laser printers were the go-to solution for offices and other commercial establishments. At home, I had invested in a black and white laser printer 15 years ago after experiencing clogged nozzles with an older inkjet. This turned out to be a very good purchase.

At some point, I also got a network enabled HP color laser printer but the cost of replacement cartridges proved too much and refilled cartridges didn't work. I wanted to try and sell it, but I was offered paltry sum of around Rs. 1000 at Nehru place, and all those people pointed to cheaper inkjet printers which were more in demand. And indeed, most local printing shops seem to be using some sort of inkjet printer. I am now saddled with a cartridge-less printer that I don't have the heart to throw away.

I am not up to date with the latest and greatest in printing technology and wanted to ask if laser printers are on the wane now or restricted for a very niche use case? Also, is trying to get a non-original cartridge worth it? I've had iffy experiences with those.

Printer companies especially HP is notorious for implementing technologies to promote their own original cartridges. That's where the profit is too them. I too have a wifi based HP printer. I don't have much usage, so I am indeed only using their original cartridge and that too just B&W. For color I don't even bother.

But I still hear about how great laser printers are. If you have considerable requirement of printing, laser printers are still a good purchase.
