To scan ports and see which ones are open and which are closed.

hey Mako. Every machine has ports open thru which they make their services available. For example if one is hosting a webiste, which is basically serving http requests then it usually runs on port 80. FTP services run on port 21 and so on. Now there are known vulnerabilities with some of the ports. So some hackers scan for open ports so that they can take advantage of these vulnerabilities.

go to Gibson Research Corporation website and use their ShieldsUp utility to scan your computer for all open ports.
