Nvidia held a press conference at GDC on Tuesday to announce "the world's first Android TV console," the $200 Nvidia Shield. No, not*that Nvidia Shield from 2013.*And no, not*the Nvidia Shield Tablet from 2014, either. The new Shield is a slicker looking piece of hardware, but is built for the living room instead of being conveniently portable like the last two devices to bear the same name. It's also running Nvidia's latest mobile GPU, the Tegra X1, which uses the same Maxwell GPU architecture as Nvidia's latest graphics cards.

Nvidia claims some big things for the Shield. It can play 4K content. It can play console-caliber games. That is, console games from the Xbox 360 / Playstation 3 generation, like Doom 3: BFG Edition, Crysis 3, and Borderlands: The Pre Sequel (which ran at about 20 frames per second in an on-stage demo. To be fair, it's still unfinished).*

The Shield has 3GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, and a slew of connectivity options: Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, HDMI 2.0 and USB 3.0.

The company says more than 50 games "optimized for Shield"*will be available for the platform at launch in May. Remember, those are Android games, and while Nvidia's list does include the upcoming Batman: Arkham Knight, Android ports of AAA games are still fairly rare.

To pull most of the big games onto the Shield, Nvidia's expanding its long-in-beta*GRID program*into a publicly available subscription service. GRID is an on-demand streaming service which uses servers full of Nvidia GPUs to render games, encode the data as a video stream, and send it to your home via the Internet, so you can play a demanding game on limited hardware. Nvidia CEO*Jen-Hsun Huang said the company has been working for years to shave off latency in the cloud gaming system.

GRID will have free and paid subscription models. No word on pricing.*Paid subscribers will be able to stream games at 1080p, 60 fps. And subscribers will also be able to buy fully-priced new releases to stream.

If the ideas of an Android console and a cloud gaming solution sound familiar to you, despite Nvidia's "world's first" claims, that's because they should: we've seen these same ideas played out with the Ouya and OnLive, though neither had Nvidia's money or engineering prowess. We love it when Nvidia puts its full might behind developing new hardware to push gaming technology forward, but there's not much here you can't do with your PC already. There's not much here you couldn't do with a gaming PC five years ago.

The Shield system goes on sale in May for $200, with a controller included. A remote that you can talk to for Google voice controls and an aluminum stand for holding the system upright will be sold separately.

According to this page: Crysis 3, Doom 3 and more ported to Android, powered by NVIDIA

More than just Crysis 3, NVIDIA's lining up other partners to port major games to Android -- specifically, to its own Android box. Doom 3: BFG Edition, Resident Evil 5, The Talos Principle, Metal Gear Solid: Revengeance and Limbo are joining Crysis 3 as native Android titles running on Shield. Randy Pitchford, president of Borderlands studio Gearbox Software, announced that Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel are also on their way to Shield.

nah im not too sold by it
first its nvidia so app incompatibility is a concern
secondly pricing is such, you might as well buy a PS3 or Xbox 360 for the same price and get a better product
thirdly I dont trust its design, itll surely not handle heat well just like the melting issues with Nexus and shield products with tegra in the past
fourthly crisis and borderlands on this are "optimised" for the hardware which on other sites was proven to be scaled down versions(like PSP/Psvita and PS3/PS4 cross play games)

From where are you able to get a new Xbox 360/ PS3 for 200$?
Its a gaming console, and as of now there are already more than 320 titles available on TegraZone - Download The Best Android Games For Your Tegra Device for Tegra based devices

If you want to play time-pass games like angry birds and temple run only, you won't buy a Tegra X1 based device will you?

Sony CECH-4308A Price in India - Buy Sony CECH-4308A Charcoal Black Online - Sony : Flipkart.com
Microsoft Xbox 360 E 4 GB Price in India - Buy Microsoft Xbox 360 E 4 GB Online - Microsoft : Flipkart.com

just 3-3.5k($200=12.5k) extra and arguably android outside of phones is nothing and wont compare to a proper console/pc
also dont forget heat dissipation....

4 GB version of Xbox and 12 GB version of PS3 aren't worth it. Games do need to be installed on it. -_-
On 16 Gb version of Shield, you'll have space for 3-4 games atleast before running out of space.

Playstation vita ran Borderlands 2 like bullcrap, i wont be surprised if this will be the same in the end.. Agreed, low requirement titles like Borderlands2/PS might run well but Crysis 3, will look like minecraft in the end

Heck, Crysis 3 does look like minecraft on XBox 360..just check screenshot comparision... DEM NO Antialiasing !

Here is another example, Bioshock for the Ipad..

My point being, current gen AAA titles are never meant to be ported to mobile chips.. Sure last gen stuff will work just fine but id prefer a full port over anything, not a half arse port with almost all the lighting and shading missing

You guys are probably overlooking the fact that they are using a new GPU. We should give it's capabilities the benefit of the doubt.

Running Crysis 3 on a mobile GPU is a big thing in itself.

but still games on the shield are half baked and heat issues will plague it just like in the past
you might as well stick to a console
Gaming With Nvidia's Shield Home Console: Can Your Network Handle It?
There's One Big Thing Preventing Nvidia's Shield Console From Greatness - Forbes

theres a reason nvidia wasnt considered for any of the "next gen consoles" and all three opted for AMD
they make great gpus but they still have a long way before making a perfect cpu(not power, its about overheating issues etc)
its similar to Samsung Exynos criticism ,doesnt matter if the chips are powerful and next gen,its the overall experience...

extremely scaled down version of crisis 3 and doom 3
the gpu is powerful no doubt but just sayin..

exactly and even when iPad 3 was released, apple claimed it was going to be a console killer

sure unreal engine games such as infinity blade etc were commendable but not at all console or pc killer quality

i just see history repeating itself

the shield tablets etc atleast had a better USP- PC game streaming on the go
even if buggy etc ,it was still a proof of concept in its time and more companies tried to follow suite

That is true, anything could happen.. after all, its nvidia not apple, they have been known to push the GPU boundaries a lot .. hopefully, they wont water down C3 as much as Bioshock was

I am saying that we should wait for some real world benchmarks to see how it would perform. Should only be a matter of weeks.

heat dissipation is still a concern though
my iPad 3 was a stove when gaming(just mentioned for reference) ,so was my Nexus 7(Tegra chipset inside),I cant imagine what something with this much considerable horsepower will be able to avoid overheating with that form factor
