1) What is your budget? (INR or USD)

Flexible but up to 2.5 lakhs

2) What size & weight consideration (if any) would you prefer?

14-16 inch

3) What are the primary tasks you will be performing with this notebook?

for recording videos/screencasts, video editing, heavy browsing, software development ( assume using heavy IDEs like jetbrains, vscode, and running Docker, k8s, etc...)

5) Any typical configuration in your mind you're eying for ?

Processor - i7
RAM - 32 GB
Graphics - dedicated 4 GB

4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
a. Like:
Dell
Mac
HP
Lenovo

b. Dislike:
Asus
Acer
MSI
Avita

6) Anything else you would like to say?

Battery backup - >= 8 hrs

I currently have MacBook pro 2015 model 2.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB graphics. But, the laptop gets stuck when I record using OBS studio. I cannot do heavy work on it.

So, I am buying a new laptop and considered few options. Can anyone tell me which is a good option?

Dell XPS 15

Dell XPS 15 (9500) Laptop | Dell India

10th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-10750H (12MB Cache, up to 5.0 GHz, 6 cores),
Windows 10 Home 64-bit English, NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1650 Ti 4GB GDDR6, 32GB DDR4-2933MHz, 2x16G, 1 TB SSD

There's a similar XPS 15 but with RAM 16 GB. I feel I need 32 GB RAM. I may be wrong

Apple 13-inch Macbook Pro M1

M1 chip with 8‑core CPU, 8-core GPU, and 16-core Neural, 16 GB RAM, 256GB SSD

13-inch MacBook Air - Space Grey

Apple 16-inch Macbook Pro

2.6GHz 6-core 9th-generation Intel Core i7 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.5GHz, 32GB DDR4 memory, AMD Radeon Pro 5300M with 4GB of GDDR6 memory, 512GB SSD storage

I know that M1 Mac gives good battery backup, but my only concern is the performance. Especially with screen recording and running heavy applications like docker and IDEs, I am afraid if it gives a good performance. Can anyone tell me about it?

Also, M1 Mac supports only 16 GB RAM, I am not sure would I need 32?

If I go with Dell XPS vs Apple 16-inch MacBook, which one should I pick?

Check ALL your software development tools run fine on M1 before buying it. The ones that have native support go BRRRRRRRR fast though..

what are the laptops with this configuration? BTW, what does this mean? graphic cards ?
5800H is an AMD laptop processor (with Vega 8 iGPU). RTX 2060, 3050Ti are dedicated graphics processing unit (dGPU).

These seem like good options but make sure you can increase ram to 64GB if required. Video editing applications which take advantage of GPU acceleration like Premier Pro would highly benefit if they run on the dGPU.

If you can sacrifice the size & weight, gaming laptops will be actually a great option + a good 4K monitor.

Victus doesn't have the best build, so I'll recommend Legion 5 instead even though it has a weaker GPU, but makes up with better thermals, build & display.
You can upgrade RAM to 2x16GB or even 2x32GB in future, if required. Also has a 2nd M.2 slot for the 2nd SSD. Its battery life meets your requirements for light tasks.

I'd say M1 is a powerful enough CPU & if you need Finalcut pro, just wait for updated MBP which are coming later this year.

I'm sorry I have very little knowledge about GPUs. Isn't NVIDIA RTX 3050Ti 4GB a good GPU? if not, what are the best GPUs? and if possible, can you briefly tell me what are these RTX, GTX and 3050Ti, etc... thanks in advance

@omega44-xt @SaiyanGoku - What do you guys think about Dell XPS 15? overpriced?
Yes, XPS 15 is overpriced, not to forget, poor thermals & other issues like some latency & sleep battery drain, don't have complete idea. Search online.

3060 > 2060 > 1660Ti ~ 3050Ti > 3050 >> 1650Ti > 1650

The performance gap between 3050 & 1650Ti is huge, like 30% or so, otherwise the gaps are like 10-15%. RTX GPUs have extra ray tracing & some tensor cores for AI/ML over GTX GPUs, something like that. Not sure of the implications for productivity tasks, but for games with ray tracing, RTX GPUs are better.

3050Ti vs 1660Ti is a very interesting case for gamers as the former has 4GB VRAM vs 6GB VRAM of the latter. 3050Ti is powerful enough as 1660Ti with extra ray-tracing cores, etc, but some games at 1080p use more than 4GB VRAM & that time it falls below 1660Ti.

I'm not 100% sure how much your tasks require a powerful GPU & high VRAM specifically, but R7 5800H + 3050Ti should be a great combination for you, that Legion 5 package specifically.
