1) What is your budget? (INR or USD)

20 to 30k, but more towards 20k, only spend more money if getting something like Thinkpad in 30k (highly improbable :) )

2) What size & weight consideration (if any) would you prefer?

I am buying for personal home use, i have used Lenovo B490 a 14 incher, its fits good on lap,
however do not mind it its 15" its going to stay at home all the time

so looking for something thin ad light to mainstrea, you can suggest some 17" also, if price and features are good

3) What are the primary tasks you will be performing with this notebook?

Dual boot, Windows 7 or 8, with Ubuntu or Mint,

Home use movies, music, surfing, youtube, office work thats it,

5) Any typical configuration in your mind you're eying for ?

I am thinking of this config

500 GB HDD (dont mind if i get 1 TB, it will be fun)
4 GB will be fine, considering if i go for 64 bit in future, if not 2 GB will be ok, and should be room for future upgrade of ram
Wifi a must, must support linux, (Broadcom is pain in the a** when used with linux)
Good speaker, loud enough,
USB 3.0, HDMI
14" to 17" will be fine but must have good viewing angle, my Lenovo B490 has very bad viewing angle
Battery should be good, it must last at least 3 hours, but i am interested to buy a lappy with high capacity battery
Good quality keyboard, (If possible with light to type in dark)

4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
nothing in general for like and dislike, the product must be good, and have good after sale service, like warranty, easy updgrade of hdd, ram, etc.

6) Anything else you would like to say?

  • Screen resolution ( 768p (HD) / 900p / 1080p (Full HD) )
  • Battery back up ( normal (3-4hrs) / extended (5-7hrs) )
  • Purchase place ( Online (eg - flipkart, infibeam) / Local / Abroad (do mention the country) )

Hope i get a full hd resolution
wish for extended battery backup
Will buy online from Flipkart or from Lamington road, from wherever i get cheap and good offer
most probably buy in a month around diwali 2014

Some few points

1) it should support major linux distros - Ubuntu, Mint, etc. (wifi driver etc)
2) no problem of heating, viewing angle, updgradability
3) wish if its light and thin
4) good warranty and service

Please suggest me based on your experience with company in After sale service, product issues, etc. i may buy it around Diwali or may be next month, i also think that some online site must have good offers and discount in diwali, so please suggest that also.

thanks in advance

afaik dell and lenovo both provide extended warranty. don't know about acer but i am sure they too must be doing the same.
some one posted a review that he has bought the first one and is using in with windows 8 and fedora so that should be ok. the second one too looks good.

no lenovo does not provide extended warranty as i had bought a Lenovo B490 in December 2012 and there was only one year warranty provided, hence i dont want to buy Lenovo, very much interested in Dell and HP
