Microsoft SharePoint or Embedded C

Hi guys, i'm a graduate from 2013 batch in ECE, like all the engineers i wanted to work in a core industry but got stuck in an IT company. currently i'm working in Microsoft SharePoint in which i have 1 yr of experience and i'm doing good where we work in .NET using C# coding and java script, but i was still trying to get a job in a core field. Now i got a chance to work in embedded systems by using embedded C. The salary is comparatively less but i'm ok with it, but my question is the scope of embedded as good as the one that i'm working with or am i digging my own grave. Please do let me know about your vision of the two domains.

Share point will confine you to the IT industry. Embedded has more scope since electronics companies require embedded skills as well.

Hmm thanks man, but can you be more elaborate about your answer regarding the scope of the two fields and their carrier opportunities.

You have to be a very good programmer to land a good job with C and embedded systems, whereas being an average coder will suffice with Sharepoint. How do you rate your coding skills?

Sharepoint is a web platform/API. You could use it to create collaboration portals for teams to share files, documents, schedules, etc. It's scope is in companies that have large or disjoint teams and who need a central portal for them to collaborate.

Embedded, however, is more core in comparison. Its scope is in companies that are into electronics projects such as companies that make modems, routers or other microcontroller based devices. Since you have a background in ECE, you would be more comfortable doing this.

I hadn't thought about that.

Yeah, you will need greater skill with coding in C to land a job in embedded.

Also, Sharepoint is in high demand these days and an okay-ish developer with 2-3 years of experience can easily land a good job with any IT major. It's much tougher to get into a major electronics company unless you're really good at hardcore C and electronics. Also, I don't think just a BE or BTech degree will do for these companies as they usually prefer people with Masters degrees or PHDs.

Thanks a lot guys, as a coder i can rate myself as an above average or good in working around the logic's. As i mentioned earlier i'm working in an MNC which is IT major in the field of SharePoint, now i am one year experienced i can see an foreseen future in this field. But SharePoint has collaboration of different skills like javascript, jquery, XSLT, CSS, HTML and .Net as well, Which i started learned only after joining the company.

After like 10 yr experience in SharePoint i cant determine that i am an master in one of the above skill sets as there are many versions of SharePoint already planned out. I heard that Microsoft is laying ground plans to develop SharePoint 2020, but as of now the latest is the SharePoint 2013 and it's still a lot more different from it's previous versions. Also we need an environment to work in SharePoint, only big Industries can afford that whereas in embedded systems i can write a code by a small adrino or raspberry pi kits, also above that i wanted to work in such an industry. I always wonder what am i doing in an IT industry after an Engineering Degree in Electronics with only a knowledge in C coding.

I have an offer in an embedded company with Embedded C as the prime language, which also an reputed indian company in the field of elecronics manufacturing, as the new policy by modi, "make in India" i do see an good future with that company.

So guys please do let me know about your vision of the two fields and help me decide my career, also thanks a lot for sharing your views and perception about the two domains.
