Long press headphone button for google voice search

For using my phone in that car, I've been long pressing the button on my earphones to activate google voice search. For some reason now everytime i do that it says "to do a Google voice search please unlock your phone". How can i get back to having my wired headphones work even in a locked screen?

Don't want to use ok google since it has a huge battery drain

I uninstalled it back to the original version and now when i do the long press i get a notification where i can allow wired headsets to work during lock. Not sure how to find this in the settings
