Laptop Buying Advice Needed - Suggestions & Doubts

Hey Guys,

I am looking to buy a new laptop and have a budget of around Rs.50-55k

A friend suggested me to buy a mid ranged laptop for around Rs.38k and buy a 500 GB SSD separately for $300 (Rs. 17k) to replace it with the laptop's HDD. Is this a good idea?

My laptop usage generally consist of Photoshop, Outlook (loads of work on outlook), multi-window browsing on Chrome (15-20 tabs open at a time)

I am thinking of taking his advice and buying a laptop (haven't found one yet) with the following specs - Intel i5 (4th gen), 4 gb RAM, 1-2 GB graphics and buy a Samsung Evo 840/850 SSD for Rs.17000.

Now, I have heard that SSDs are not good when it comes to longevity. Is it true?

What do you guys recommend -

1. Spending Rs.50-55k on a High-end Laptop
2. Spending Rs.37-38k on Laptop and rest of my budget on a SSD.

Please advice.

Thank You :)

50-55k won't get you a high end laptop but lower-mid range at best.

No point in buying under 40k laptop and adding ssd to it.

500 GB ssd is overkill. Even desktop assemblers don't get it.

Just get this Lenovo Z50 Notebook (4th Gen Ci5/ 8GB/ 1TB/ Win8.1/ 4GB Graph) (59-429607) Rs.52365 Price in India - Buy Lenovo Z50 Notebook (4th Gen Ci5/ 8GB/ 1TB/ Win8.1/ 4GB Graph) (59-429607) Online - Lenovo : Flipkart.com

And if you want, replace the DVD Drive with a Samsung 850 Evo 120 GB ssd in a caddy.

Would be better that way.

Thanks for the advice. really appreciate it. I already bought the laptop just today from Lamington Road (Mumbai)

It's a Lenovo Z50 - i5 4th gen 4210u (with turbo boost), 4 gb ram, 1 tb hdd, 2 gb graphics (onboard). Got 4 gb extra ram and 250 gb SSD Samsung 850 evo. So my final laptop config is - i5 4th gen, 8 GB ram, 250 gb SSD, 2 gb intel graphics and got all of this for Rs. 47,500. :)

I am happy with the performance :)

PS. i have no idea what is a caddy.

Wait what? There is nothing such as 2 GB Intel Graphics.

I think you might have gotten a Z50 with 820M. Mind checking what it says in Device Manager or the laptop's box? If its 820M or N15V-GM, try to return it. Its not worth the money.

Best of both worlds: putting an SSD in your optical bay « Super User Blog

Edit: With that price, I think you got a Z50 without a dGPU . RETURN IT!!
(if what I think is true, that was a stupid purchase)

Yep. It's onboard graphics and works just fine. I am happy with the performance so far.
