I know Jyoti Basu's death will evoke various kinds of reactions, but I am surprised no one mentioned it here.

Jyoti Basu, an icon of the country’s Communist movement and a leader who could have become the world’s first democratically elected Marxist prime minister, died at a Kolkata hospital on Sunday.

He was 95.

But he was cm , what he did for bengal except panchayet?

Good question, I will let others reply on this. For me, the only useful thing he did was inaugurate the SDF building, the 1st building in Sector-V, Salt Lake, Kolkata. This is the principal location of the IT industry in the eastern region. Now around 70000-80000 people work in the IT industry in Sec-V alone.
