Which is the Operating System?
If its Windows XP with SP2, then go to Command Prompt and type the command netsh winsock reset and press Enter key. Restart the System and check whether you can acesss the Internet.

If its Windows XP without SP2 or if its Windows 2000, then download WinSockXPFix and click the "Fix" button.

BTW, do you have any Firewall ?

nope it didnt help either.what else could it be?whats causing it?i think i didnt mention that when i just type the address of the website, without www or .com/.net pre and suffixes, it returns a value like * google and the title bar displays a syntax error message.
also, there is a wierd thing happening, after i connect to the net and try accessing and disconnect, a process called svchost.exe takes up around 99% of cpu usage.whats this program?i have scanned my pc with spyware doctor, registry mechanic and mac a free antivirus

Hi,
Download HijackThis and unzip it to dedicated folder (like C:\HijackThisFolder\hijackthis.exe).
Then run it and click the button Do a System scan and save log file. HijackThis will perform a scan and saves the log file as hijackthis.log in the same folder where it is installed and it also opens the file automatically.
Copy the entire contents of the file and post it here.

HijackThis has also been given in Digit or any other PC magazine CDs. You can look in those CDs to get it, if you cannot download it.

And, the mDNSResponder.exe is related to Apple iTunes.
mdnsresponder.exe is a process associated with "Bonjour for Windows" software. It is used by ITunes for music sharing. This is a non-essential process. Disabling or enabling this is down to user preference.

Hi,
Log looks clean. If you are sharing the Internet from another PC, then i think there's a problem in the configuration.
These links show the configuration for sharing:-

This Raven's thread might help you:-

You haven't mentioned if the dial-up internet connection works on your desktop. Use the same dial-up ISP and phone line on your desktop computer and let me know if you get the internet working.

Maybe your phone line has too much noise, or, while i am guessing, maybe your dial-up ISP is having some temporary problems.

Hi,
Have you tried the Ping command? Go To Command Prompt and type
ping www.google.com and press Enter key. At end, observe the line which says "Sent", "Received" and "Lost". Post back whether there were any lost packets?
