Right now my core configuration is:
Intel 2.4 GHz Prescott
256 MB DDR RAM
Intel 865 Motherboard
GeForce FX 5200 128 MB AGP

I bought this computer over two years ago and now it's woefully inadequate to play games.

I've got Rs. 7000 now. How can I best upgrade my computer?

My main objective is games, please note.

Should I buy a card for around Rs. 7k and then buy 1 GB RAM later when I get more money? (If so, what card do you recommend?)

Should I buy 1 GB DDR400 (max. my motherboard can support) now and then save up for a card later?

Your help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the replies, guys. 2 GB RAM? Isn't that overkill? My motherboard and processor themselves will be bottlenecks, no?

More comments are welcome.

I'll get a completely new machine a year from now when I have a job.

Until then gotta make do with half measures.

If you plan to get a new machine in a year, dont do what I suggested... Both the RAM and the graphics card that you purchase will be useless because you will be using DDR2 RAM and PCIe gfx card most probably for the new system... So, the 7k you spent will be wasted... Instead look for investing in items that you will definitely purchase then also - for example, think about getting good 5.1 speaker set, a laser mouse, a big-screen monitor, nice cabinet with decent SMPS (cabinet is only if you plan to assemble the computer and not purchase a branded one or get it assembled elsewhere), etc.
