Help for buying ram and it's compatibility

Hi

I am using hyperX fury hx318c10f/4 4gb X 2 ram blue color total 8gb

I want to upgrade it and shopkeeper suggested me to go for hyperX fury HX318C10FB/8 which is 8gb single stick and black color.

I have read somewhere that ram should be compatible so I am confused that these rams are compatible or not. Please help so that I can buy this black color ram.

my mobo is gigabyte h97m d3h. It has 4 slot so I can put 8gb x 4 ram in it or not?

Thanks in advance

As long as all sticks (old and new) are of same type (DDR3 in your case), it would work. Just make sure that clock speed of new stick is not lower than existing sticks.

For performance reasons, its better to go dual channel and use 4x2 rather than 8x1.

For intel & for non-gaming/typical use applications, that does not matter much.Even for latest ryzen, only G processors see a significant benefit from dual channel. The normal ryzen processors coupled with a less than 1080 too will not see much performance increase by using dual channel ram either.

You board supports Max 1600 Mhz RAM See the link here
This board had 2 revisions and both support max 1600 only.
As a result even if you install 1866 it will be by default down clocked to boards max support i.e. 1600.

Generally getting dual channel operation entirely depends upon how the vendor has designed the memory controller and how it perceives the SS/DS memory stick combinations. To know if your memory combination is working in single or dual channel use CPU-Z app and go to Memory Tab after it finished loading.

You might try overclocking if board and memory support so but then results might be unpredictable including unbootable system. You will have to reset the BIOS to get it back working.

Note the last para is a general comment, I have not verified if the board supports overclocking or not and if it's possible to overclock memory that way on this board!

For general usage, you won't notice much difference between 1600 and 1866, so better to leave it that way.
