Having trouble opening Excel files using MS Excel 2010

I recently installed MS Office on my PC. I observed that whenever I try to open any excel file with format xlsx it throws up an error
<File Name>is not a valid win 32 application. When I drag and drop the same file I'm able to view it in excel it's only when I try to double click to open that I face this issue. I tried various options that were able to fix this by searching on google.

Any help will be appreciated.

Somehow the file is not being able to find it's actual target I suppose, which is MS Excel in this case? Have you tried right clicking it and open it with and select Excel manually from properties?
