Gmail app only checks emails with home wifi

I think you have set the priority WiFi as you home WiFi. Whenever you are in priority WiFi it updates. Check the settings and add your campus WiFi in the priority list.

I recently moved to a hostel and the Gmail mobile app does not automatically download emails when I am connected to the campus wifi. I have to manually refresh it for it to actually show the emails. It works fine on 2G or when I am connected to WiFi at home.
Well, what you can do is try clearing the cache and the data stored by the GMail app, Google PlayStore and PlayServices app by heading over to the settings>Application manager and then try opening the gmail and check if it sync over the 2G network !

I think your wifi automatically update the gmail app.
