I suppose the application you are talking about is norton ghost which is used to restore the system to a state which you have stored as image either on hard disk or any removable storage. The biggest advantage is you can restore the complete OS and all the other installed applications in 10-12 mins.

there are other freewares available but they are not as good as Norton Ghost. You might be lucky to find something fruitful through torrents as far as ghost is concerned.
