Right off the assembly line
Hey guys, I need to buy a new desktop in a day or two. Here are the CPU components I've chosen:

Intel 946 Motherboard.

Intel Core 2 Duo E4400 (2 MB L2 Cache, 2 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)

Transcend 2GB DDR2 RAM (two 1GB modules)

GeForce 6200 Graphics Card (256 MB)

I'm sure that the RAM is great. But I need all of your inputs regarding the motherboard, processor and graphics card.

I don't know anything about this motherboard. It was recommended by my assembler. I seriously need all of your inputs and other alternative recommendations on this one. Is this advanced enough for a high-end system?

The processor is quite OK, although I would like to know if you recommend the 4 MB L2 Cache models. Or is this processor enough to work smoothly with Vista (especially the Aero versions)?

And the graphics card, well, I wanted to get the 7600GT, but that's way too expensive. The assembler suggested this one (6200). What do you guys think about this? Is it good? Got enough juice to run Vista and high-requirement games smoothly?

That's all I need, I guess.

THERE'S A $10 (PayPal) GIFT FOR THE BEST HELPER/S. (If more than one responds in a great detailed manner, the $10 will be divided among them. The winner will be selected at my discretion).

Please help me guys, I need to finalize everything by tomorrow evening at the max.

Regards,
Nithanth Kudige

wats ur budget??? And dont get a 946gz.. Get a dg965ry.. Its vista ready.. The gma x3000 onboard gfx can handle aero easily.. And if u can, get the e6320.. It has 4mb l2 cache..also dont take a gc now.. Wait 4 the dx10 dust to settle down..

Your Assembler is suggesting wrong chipset Series. You should be looking for 965 Series and if you can find Intel DG965WH MOBO then it will be great. It has all the necessary features you are looking for except two which are not important to me :p No overclocking, Not an SLI MOBO. Otherwise Awesome MOBO.

Rather than Transcend RAM sticks, go for Kingston.

As for Vista, the Onboard on Dg965WH can handle most games as well as Aero on Vista. What i can suggest is that..dont buy a Graphic Card. Wait a few months and get DX10 card like 8800 series once the prices are reasonable :)

the proccy u've chosen is good.if u want 4MB L2 cache then go for 6420.just go thru some reviews and u'll get an idea.
if u wanna oc then buy a 965 chipset mobo like Asus P5B Deluxe,MSI P965 Platinum or Gigabyte DS3P.
dont buy a 6200.its performance is not upto the mark.its better to 8600GT if u wanna buya gfx card now, else wait 4 ATI to launch their cards.

If you want to purchase the PC with gaming in your mind (even if it is not the main purpose), I would recommend AMD system instead of intel system... The reason is simple... With AMD, processor+motherboard cost will come down allowing you to put more cash into the budget for your gfx card... You will get better Value for Money with AMD, even though performance may be a bit less than Intel...

My suggestion: AMD X2 3600+ (for Rs3550) with ASUS M2N-MX (Rs 3850)... Then, you can get a good gfx card like atleast 7600GS, or if you want to get DirectX10 compatible card, you can try Sparkle 8500GT which is currently available for 6300 currently on sale at The IT Wares (Bombay) site *www.theitwares.com/

^^^ why u suggesting 8500GT.its gaming performance is not upto the mark.8600GT will be a bit better.but the best think to do will be to wait for ATI to launch their cards

Thanks for all your suggestions guys. I decided to change a few components I had chosen. Here's the changed items list:

Motherboard - Intel DG965GH
Good choice? :)

Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
One assembler says it will be available by the end of this week, and the other says it's not even released in India yet. It's released, right? Any of you using this?

Graphics Card - nVIDIA GeForce 7600GT PCI Express Slot Card
I told my assembler that I need a 7600GT, and he recommended this one. I'm not sure though, whether PCI Express cards perform better or AGP. Which is better? Which should I go for?

TV Tuner - Pinnacle External TV Tuner Box (Rs. 5200)
My assembler recommended external TV Tuner box. He says it's better to have any external one rather than internal. Also, in the link that sakumar79 provided, the range of external TV Tuner Boxes is in Rs.1xxx. But my assembler has quoted Rs.5200 for mine. He says cheaper ones are available, but they don't do well. Should I go for this one? Or a cheaper one?

Oh, but why is that?

Just a thought regarding what some of you suggested. If I don't get a graphics card right away and wait till DX10 cards' prices come down, will the on-board graphics still be enough to play high-end games such as NFS Carbon or run Vista?

Yes, onboard on DG965WH can manage Carbon and Vista :) Yep, you should wait for DX10 Cards. Not much time left now when ATi will hit the market and it is then when competition will force price cuts :D

Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 is available in India since a long time. Just that it used to sell at Rs 16000+ two weeks back. It is now around 11000+

Graphics Card - nVIDIA GeForce 7600GT PCI Express Slot Card - That is the Chipset the Graphic card would be having. Make sure it is of good brand like MSI ASUS etc

Motherboard - Intel DG965WH - Available in India but at very few places.

TV Tuner - Pinnacle External TV Tuner Box - Absoultely RIDICULOUS :D
Get a Pinnacle Internal for Rs 2300 and you will be running fine
