Hey Guys,

I am in the market looking for an upgrade to my 3 yr old HP Pavillion DV6(Core I5 450m , Amd Radeon 5650m), I was holding off until the major brands introduce the new Intel Haswell line in India, which they have now. So here goes the std questionnaire

Budget : 65K( the only good laptops available above this range are the Lenovo Y500/Y510p, neither of which I am interested in)

Requirement : Productivity, Gaming ( I used to be a gaming aficionado but now I play only the mainstream titles like COD,BF,AC,COH,NFS etc)

Screen : 15.6 Inches

Other Requirements : Good Battery Life ( Atleast 4 Hrs), Windows 8

Optional Requirements : Backlit Keyboard, Anti Glare Screen

I did some market research and finalized the following models.

Lenovo Z500

Lenovo Ideapad Z500 Laptop (3rd Gen Ci7/ 8GB/ 1TB/ Win8/ 2GB Graph) - Lenovo: Flipkart.com

HP Envy 15 J049Tx

Samsung NP550P5C-S05IN

*samsungindiaestore.com/Products/Laptops/NP550P5C-S05IN_NP550P5C-S05IN

Dell Inspiron 15 R

Dell Inspiron 15R Laptop - Mainstream laptops from Dell

All of the above laptops have 8 GB RAM/ 1 TB HD

I had a closer look at their specs ( CPU + GPU)

Lenovo Z500 : Intel Core I7 3632QM + Nvidia GT 740M(DDR3)

Premium Features : NONE

HP Envy 15 : Intel Core I5 4200M + Nvidia GT 740M(DDR3)

Premium Features : Backlit Keyboard

Samsung NP550P5C-S05IN : Intel Core I7 3630QM + Nvidia GT 650M(DDR3)

Premium Features : Higher Resolution Matte Display, Blue Ray Drive

Dell Inspiron 15 R : Intel Core I7 4500U + AMD RADEON 8850M(DDR5)

Premium Features : None

The most powerful GFX in the above mentioned laptops is the AMD 8850M, It performs on the level of the Nvidia GT 750m and beats the other GFX's in the above list by miles.

The most Powerful Processor available in the above mentioned laptops is the Core I7 3630QM, its considerably faster than the Haswell Dual Cores in the HP and Dell laptops.

However I am confused as to which config will give the best overall performance ?, As I understand games and other Graphically intensive apps utilize the GPU more than the CPU, so the laptop with the best GPU and relatively powerful dual core should perform better than a laptop with a mediocre GPU and a quad core.

My understanding aside, I would like your opinion and understanding on this particular topic so that I can select the best out of the above mentioned laptops.

P.S. : PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ADD ANY OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS OF YOUR OWN.

Thanks In Advance,
Abhijit

Why no Y510p ?

Among others, I personally feel S05IN would be better choice due to 900p matte display & its awesome speakers

Nah, I dont think its worth spending 75k when I am going to upgrade in another 2-3 yrs anyways.

S05in has a DDR3 GT 650m which is about 2 yrs old now, you think its wise to go for a gpu that old.

As far as overall package is concerned, S05 seems better than Dell due to higher resolution screen & JBL speakers with sub woofers.

For gaming Dell is definitely better. What about Lenovo Y500 ?
Lenovo Ideapad Y500 (59-379647) Laptop (3rd Gen Ci7/ 8GB/ 1TB/ Win8/ 2GB Graph) - Lenovo: Flipkart.com

You can find it cheaper locally. It has better CPU & a backlit keyboard

Well I asked around Delhi for the Lenovo Y500, but none of the lenovo retailers seem to have it(have to check at Nehru Place), but even if its available, It costs way too much for my taste's.

But No one has answered my question yet, which of the following setups would provide the max performance with games and other apps considering the same amount of RAM for each(8 GB)

1. Core I7-4500U + DDR5 AMD 8850M( Equivalent to DDR5 GT 750M)

2. Core I7-3632QM + DDR3 GT 740M

3. Core I7-3630QM + DDR3 GT 650M

4. Core I5-4200M + DDR3 GT 740M

well as per me i think your choice number 1. Core I7-4500U + DDR5 AMD 8850M should outperform the rest easily.

But
i7 3632M + GT750M of Y500 will outperform the rest.

Y500 hasn't been discontinued yet. You must be able to find it for 65k at Nehru place......... My friend's cousin bought one 2 weeks ago
